The beginning of a Legendary thread.

Summary : Look around almost anywhere, and you will eventually see people and sources note that Helloween was the band that created Power Metal. Both Keeper of the Seven Keys part 1, and 2 are renowned as the starting of the genre, and some people say they "Started and Killed Power Metal, there is no good Power Metal after them".

The band has been around for over 20 years, but it's changed drastically throughout it's lifetime, ultimately changing faces of the band itself. The band was started with none other than my favorite, Kai Hansen and then Piet Scielk (Iron Savior). They eventually changed their temporary band name to Helloween. Piet didn't stick around, but Kai brought along a few members, Weiketh, Ingo, and Markus. The band first started with an EP and finally their first album, Walls of Jericho.

Kai Hansen did vocals, and ultimately found that it was very hard to play lead guitars and sing at the same time back then, so he wanted to find a singer. He had heard Queensryche, and was inspired to find someone with a voice like Geoff Tate. Eventually they found Micheal Kiske, who sounded almost exaclty like Geoff Tate and Bruce Dickinson.

From there the start of the end began, maybe. They wanted to do a double album, but their record wouldn't let them. So, they made Keeper of the Seven Keys part 1, and then next year part 2. The first album was already a huge success, but these two made Helloween legendary.

Then Kai wrote the song, "I Want Out". He wanted out of the band. He was going to college at the time and found it very hard to be playing at so many concerts again and again, and didn't like the direction that some of the band members wanted to take the band to (Kiske, more pop like). Kai leaves, and many will say the band went to hell afterwards. Albums like Pink Bubbles Go Ape and Chameleon were released with Kiske being the main man. Both albums did so horrible, and the fans hated them so much, that the band asked Kiske to leave.

They ended up getting a new singer and a few new members. Andi Deris took up vocals. They released Master of the Rings, which is considered by many to be "their return to glorious metal!" However, shortly after it was heard that the bands original drummer, Ingo had committed suicide. He had a drug and drinking problem, and didn't like where the band went after Kai's leave. Helloween then made the album, The Time of the Oath, dedicated to Ingo, and once again proved they're back in metal.

After that I don't know much about the band, other than that their Dark Ride album was another good one. They tried making Keeper of the Seven Keys: The Legacy, but something 20 years later just cannot catch the magic of the original Keeper albums. Some loved the new one, some hated it. You just can't argue it's different, and has a different taste.

Did anyone read that? Anyways, here's the list of albums. I have quite a few that I plan to upload eventually:

The Keepers Of Jericho 2 - 2002

Reviews

- Helloween EP and Walls of Jericho:
Kai Hansen's first real album, and a killer one too. If you enjoy Metallica's Kill Em All, Pantera, Megedeth, you'd easily fall in love with these. They're more thrash than anything Kai has ever done, and by reading the lyrics you'll see that Kai was a little different back then. It's dark, furious, and fast.

My only complaint is the quality of this album. The EP is in remastered form and sounds perfectly fine, but the Walls of Jericho songs are sometimes hard to listen to if you're not in the mood. It's hard to hear Kai, and some of the drums and bass sound horrible. But musically, it's just awesome, especially with songs like "Ride the Sky". It's just the recording quality that hurts it.

Some people also say Kai wasn't a great singer back then. Honestly I see nothing wrong wth his singing. Yeah, he doesn't have a good rythm in Starlight, and he almost instantaneously changes his pitch at times, but I still like it a lot. Really, this album sounds a LOT like Metallica's Kill em All.

- Helloween: Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1 and 2:
Not much to say about these two albums ... other than the fact that they gave birth to Power Metal! =D

But really, these two albums were the first of this sort of style. Epic, upbeat, fast, heavy, and dramatic. All the usual elements that make up the majority of Power Metal that we hear from these two albums and onward. It's a huge leap of change in style from Walls of Jericho, especially since they recruited Michael Kiske to do voices. Expect a Bruce Dickinson sound to his style of singing, and it's perfect and goes well with the music.

Part 1 and Part 2 sound exactly the same in style, the only difference is a slight increase in production quality in Part 2. Originally they were planned to be one Double Album, so they do connect perfectly.

Kai Hansen did most of the writing for Part 1, so you can expect a simple set of awesome metal songs on the first album. Weiketh did most of the writing for Part 2, and you can tell they're quite different among each other, Weiketh is definitely more experimental and some his songs are just plain weird (in my opinion, I easily prefer Kai over him).

Overall I've listend to both of these albums, probably as much as, or even more than how many times I've listend to Gamma Ray albums. Incredible flawless albums.

- Tribute 1: The Keeper of Jericho:
I was blown away by some of the first songs. You couldn't start this album off any better with a cover from Rhapsody. Then Sonata Arctica does a perfect and flawless job covering I Want Out. Luca Turilli's song is great too, because ... well, he's Rhapsody's lead guitarist. I was blown away by Morifade, and Dark Moor's covers on here, for bands I had never heard of. They were so good I'm interested in checking their actual works out (It's funny to listen to Dark Moor though, I doupt that guy knows hardly any English. It's still awesome though). Then there's a few bad ones on here, like Brainstorm, Cydonia, and Squeeler, I didn't like them at all.

But overall, you guys should enjoy this one. The bands do a great job of giving that old school Helloween taste back, while still breathing in new life with their own styles.

(more later)
(hope people like this, this is perhaps the biggest thread I've made in months )

Walls of Jericho is in now.

The first 5 songs have great quality, and they're from the EP. But after that you can probably easily notice the quality drop ...

This is it.

I've noticed this stuff sounds better with headphones, but yeah.

I don't know, at first I didn't really enjoy it but some of the songs have stuck in my head lately, and it isn't to bad to listen to them, it's just quite a change from listening to stuff nowadays.

I really like Warrior on here (from the EP).

I really dont like Sonata Artica, But on the tribute album the song they covered "I want out" Is amazing.

That whole tribute album is, except a few dumb songs.

The walls of jericho is fucking awesome, once you go past the quality.

Helloween is awesome.

Props to xeo!

Did you find Kai's singing bad?

Like I said, other than Starlight, I thought it was fine, heck I thought his voice really brought out the dark / furiousness of the album.

But I'll upload Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1 and 2 soon, with Micheal Kiske on vocals. The musical style changes, but it's still awesome and the start of Power Metal.

And yeah, I think Sonata has some really great songs here and there, and they're overall a band I really enjoy, I just have never cared for their vocals, but I thought they were really well done on their "I Want Out" cover on the tribute album.

Please use anything but rapidshare
Hourly limits piss me off.

Right now I'm trying out filefactory.com by uploading the Iron Maiden stuff. If it DOES upload than I'm using this site for now on.

Just let me know how it is.

I just reverted back to rapidshare because I have used it before. I was pretty pissed to see my files got erased from Megashares.

But yeah, Rapidshare's hour limit has always annoyed me. But at least I uploaded it. ;P

Well I'm more pissed off than you because I got half of the ACDC albums uploaded on megashares, erased all of them. before that I put half of them up on gimehost. Server erased everything.

So....I found a new host, still testing things out. I'll re upload all the ACDC stuff AGAIN...

Sheesh.

I'm guessing megashares has some kind of weird limit, like the file must be downloaded every hour or something.

But yeah, I'll have to try some of these new online sites out myself. I'm getting pretty tired of rapidshare, it's reliable, but extremely slow and has that stupid hour limit 1 download thing.
