Art is subjective, really. She's right in saying that she shouldn't feel obliged to create something that makes people feel good. But I also think she's just making herself look foolish and drugged out of her mind. What next? Someone in her company gets impregnated during a show and a few months later they perform an abortion on stage with a rusty clothes hanger? Nah, that sounds more complex than they'd go for. When I was in middle school, I remembered hearing about this group that presented you with a man who had AIDS. Someone came out and whipped him until he bled. Another person then came out and put a cloth over the wounds. They then hung the cloth over the audience just to watch them squirm away so the blood wouldn't drip on them, and perhaps infect them in the process. That's the sort of performance art that makes you think or feel something as shocking as it is. |
