I get the point.... Here's the thing though. We are a minority when it comes to this subject. So as many Americans see it. They are more attracted to a movie starring Chris Evans (Captain America) or even Garrett Hedland (Sam Flynn) than a movie starring Tacyeon (2PM Singer) or Shouma Yamamoto (Cutie Honey the Live) Americanizing the motorcycles would have been extremely easy with Indian Motorcycles (Terminator IV)... Too bad their out of business. |

I know. We've been having these debates for years, going from The Lion King to Godzila to The Last Airbender to the failed attempts to remake Battle Royale.
This is just the latest case of whitewashing we're discussing. EDIT: Heck, even in posts above this one we were talking about the dropped Americanized, live action Evangelion movie. |

So this just refuses to die. It's been greenlit and with the guy who played Sam Flynn in Tron: Legacy as the frontrunner for some as yet undisclosed part.
Those who've read the script are saying this is definitely not going to be a direct remake of the movie (since it takes place in New Manhattan, etc), but why even call it "Akira" at this point, then? |

I actually think that he'd be good for that part, seeing as how Spike is Chinese and all... though I'm dubious about that being his true heritage. How many Chinese people have you met with the last name 'Spiegel'? |

As far as I know he's still playing Spike in the live action Cowboy Bebop, but there hasn't been any news on it past the announcement that it was going to happen. I know that he specifically requested that role.
Since Keanu is part Chinese some producers seek him out so they can wave the Diversity flag. |

They lost another director. Apparently they were REALLY depending on Keanu Reeves signing onto the project and when he rejected it, it threw off their entire production schedule. Their latest director pretty much just said fuck it and left.

I remember when Stephen Chow was briefly attached to Dragonball Evolution to direct. Back then I thought, "How bad could it be?" since I loved Stephen and his work so much. But then he backed out "for creative reasons."
Can't say as I blame him but he did the same thing with Green Hornet, of which he was also supposed to direct and play Kato simultaneously. Back to Akira, Warner Brothers is arguing that it's going to take place in New Manhattan instead of Neo Tokyo. Yeah! A valid excuse for everyone to be white, AFTER ALL. All is forgiven, right? 
I seriously just hope that this folds in the concept art stage like live-action Evangelion did back in 2004. While Weta was doing all these drawings of camel toe-emphasizing plug suits on girls named Ray and Kate Rose, fans were already throwing a fit about Shiunji not being played by an Asian boy. Seriously, though. Camel toe...  |
