I remember seeing some of these PSAs in high school, like the one below. Hm..

Anyway, people are going to be bad parents if they're going to be.

EDIT: I've been re-watching Louis CK lately, and he loves to talk about his misadventures as a father.

You gotta hand it to him. Call him a shitty dad if you want, at least the man is IN HIS DAUGHTERS' LIVES and trying his damnedest to be as good a dad as he can be.

I believe the phrase that first popped into my head was "Hell to the No"

I blame the cheerleading commercial.

I don't know if it's on purpose, but whenever they play the ads on TVs around here, the "dad" is almost always a minority. It's only now that I'm looking them up on YouTube that I see one of them is Caucasian.

I just think it's a shame that we need these ads at all. But in all seriousness, do you think any deadbeat dad would see these ads and feel like he's just received his wake-up call?

The guy playing the dad was just WAY too into that cheer. He was quite good actually.

But yeah... what the fuck?

Hear, hear. I'm sick of these PSAs telling people to be fathers to their children.

Seriously? We need these things?

He was kinda gobliny. And somewhat green.

Anyway, it wouldn't even have to be an average IQ... just competent enough to know how to raise a child. I've seen enough children go through neglect in my lifetime to hate it as I do.

I don't think IQ test to breed, just a license to breed. You'd have to go through training for it to get the license and that way people would at least know what the fuck they were doing.

Smart dudes don't give shits about their kids either, Nel, so an IQ test to breed isn't just some insane start to a super-villain's "perfect human race" utopia. What do you think poor Harry Osborn's dad was like?!

Not after she files for child support, he won't!

If you support the right for there to be the option, that's more pro-choice, I'd think, even if you weren't personally of the mind that you would abort if you were in the situation.

As for your first point, Nelrith, I agree. Seems like the majority of my friends who have children are single parents with fatherless children because these guys don't want to be a part of their children's lives (although I know of one who uses pictures of his son he NEVER sees as a sort of pick-up for girls and then claims he'd make a great dad if only the mother would let him). My boyfriend's 17-year-old sister is pregnant, and the father broke up with her in a letter with a list of pros and cons, listing among the pros of leaving her, wanting nothing to do with his child, "I'll have more money to do the things I want." Fucking prick.

Anyway, this was all just a thought. As TP pointed out, it's going into the extremes.

I'm of the opinion that a certain IQ should be required and a test of some sort be passed before conception is legal. Enough children are brought into this world where the parent doesn't give a flying fuck about them, and that's what really irks me.

That's just making an extreme to create doubt about where to draw the line.

Like for cultural relativism, if what a culture does is good for that culture and we shouldn't be judgemental, then shouldn't we have not caused such a stir for the slavery, genocides, etcs of peoples because that's what some cultures were doing?

It's hypocritical if you look at it like a math equation but it totally isn't. If you're gonna have the kid then keep the little playa in good health.

You make a valid point.

Perhaps it is because of the notion that you are choosing to have the kid, so why do things that will damage it? I'm against the doing drugs in general... and the smoking.

But yeah... drinking while pregnant... just a bad idea for both. Can damage the kid, can really fuck with mom... yeah.

So I suddenly thought about something regarding the whole pro-choice argument.

Why is it that we argue that a woman should be allowed to do what she wants with her body, most specifically the right to abort an unwanted pregnancy, but we get really angry at the notion of a pregnant woman, intending to carry to term, smoking, drinking, and doing drugs?

I'm personally pro-choice, and against pregnant women doing these things, but doesn't it come off as hypocritical to dictate that women shouldn't do these things if they choose to?

Thoughts?
