Sixth-grader admits stabbing ducks with pencil
POSTED: 1:07 p.m. EDT, May 4, 2007

WICHITA, Kansas (AP) -- A sixth-grader stabbed to death a mother duck and two ducklings that had nested near a school, distressing the other children and alarming officials who said the boy needs mental health treatment.

Students at Wilbur Middle School had named the mother duck Lucy and were monitoring her and her brood, making sure no one disturbed the nest in a grassy creek bed. Their mutilated bodies -- stabbed with a pencil -- were found this week.

An announcement over the public address system led the boy to admit the killings, officials said. They said he had also talked about the act to classmates and didn't understand why it was wrong.

The boy, whose name was not released, was suspended Wednesday. His return to the school will hinge on a hearing.

School officials were responding "the way we do whenever we believe that a child might be a risk to himself or others," said Liz McGinness, who coordinates the district's mental health crisis team.

She said his parents were being told they must seek outside mental health care. "We really don't mince words on this," she said. "We know that animal cruelty is a very serious, significant behavior."

No decision has been made on possible criminal charges. Killing mallard ducks is illegal this time of year, and even in hunting season, the way they were killed would be illegal, officials said.

Mark Rankin, assistant director of law enforcement for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, said the boy may not be charged because of his age. A hunting violation charge could bring an adult up to seven days in jail and a $250 fine, while animal cruelty carries up to a year in jail and $10,000 in fines, he said.

Kris Meckenstock said his seventh-grade son helped monitor the nest and "just can't believe somebody could be so mean."

"By the same token, I think that kid obviously needs help," Meckenstock added. "My thought is, we need to look a little bit further and find out why somebody would have those tendencies."

Wilbur students and staff held a ceremony Thursday "to share their grief for these animals," McGinness said.

If I'm not mistaken killing small animals and not finding anything wrong with it is a SERIOUS warning sign that someone is a sociopath.

A few people whom I've shared this story with have demanded that the kid be locked up as there is nothing that can be done to keep a sociopath from evolving into murdering people.

Any thoughts?

Why did they suspend him? Killing ducks has nothing to do with school.

Ok, locking a 12 year old up would do nothing except turn him into a criminal. Once someone goes to jail, they can't stay out of it, it's almost impossible. Also, he has no understanding of the law, as he has no understanding of why it was wrong to stab the duckies with his pencil. Therefore criminal charges could not hold up in a court of law.

Honestly, I think a 12 year old is damn well smart enough to understand what he's doing. I've been around enough children growing up, including my younger siblings and all their friends, etc, to say that with confidence. They may not be einstiens, but still, they know what they're doing.

I don't think locking the kid up will do much either. Though something is rather off with him. Probably has a lot to do with family history, and just the kid himself. Either way, I don't envy the family nor the people who have to work with the kid. Doing something like that would take a serious amount of concentrated effort. And to go about explaining to other kids why you did it? The kid scares me.

I've never seen a smart-ass doing that in my entire life. At least it's animal cruelity.

Not neccesarily everyone, jsut anyone who went to jail as a minor, and lost their entire education. For instance, my grandfather went to jail, and then went out and worked as a security guard. He put a few people in jail too.

Anyone, on the subject at hand, that kid is really messed up. I hear that the psych ward is a nice place...

Well, maybe they suspended him because they school loaned him that pencil and he ruined it.(Okay not funny I get it.)

Someone Isn't necessarily a sociopath because he stabbed a duck and didn't think it was wrong. Half of your education comes from life-skills with your parents and friends, so I don't think anyone should be pointing fingers and calling names until they look into that. If your friends are sick as fuck and your around them too long, it rubs off, trust me.

There ya have it, Byte.

Anyway. Yes. A 12 year old knows what he's doing at that point. I have an 11 year old nephew, and he can understand right from wrong, knowing what death is. That is just cruelty...

Your right, not everyone that chose this becomes a sociopath, but over half of long term studies of children who show such behavior do end up developing into more serious ill behaviors if they do not receive proper treatment. Pick up a psychology book, most will deem this kid as a sociopath.

However, a full mental analysis of this kid's behavior, past and life should be done before deciding on what to do with anything. He's still young and the proper treatment could very well help him.

Stabbing a duck really shows that you have problems and should be treated with psychological help. I would like to know what the kid had to say for himself. Exact words I mean, and how he reacted when telling them.

The hell?! That's just...damn...

As far as being ocnsidered a sociopath, of course the situation should be looked into before making any certain proclamations. **shrugs** We're humans, imperfect beings. I don't think even our best minds can look at something and be accurate without some research.
