Okay, so...

Back in high school, when Cloverfield had been freshly released, I asked alot of people what they thought of it. Oddly enough, about 90% of men enjoyed it thoroughly, and about 95% of women thought it was the worst movie they'd ever seen.

Post thoughts!

Me and my girlfriend liked it a lot. She cried during it because she sympathized with the characters and felt afraid.

There's no reason for this to be seperated by men and women. I know a lot of girls who like the movie, and guys that hate it.

Yeah, honestly, it's what I called a very well made bad movie. It managed to do the tension just right, the acting was pretty good, and the monster was awesome, but...

Character development = failure.

Scary = failure.

Story = failure.

And seriously, did anyone have any idea what the heck was going on? Nothing in the entire movie was really explained unless you examined it for days with frame by frame examination. Failure.

Hummmmm
I liked it. The only reason I got for anybody disliking it was the camera movement. People calmed to get nauseous which I though was a little drastic. I admit at times I felt myself moving around trying to move the camera with my mind you might say so I could get a better angle :p

And the monster was sick!

Well, then I guess I fall into your theory, but my boyfriend does not.

I can tell you right now it wasn't for the camera shaking/moving, for plot holes like the camera battery lasting longer than it should have, that you can walk the distance these people did in a matter of a few hours, etc, or for the fact that it was meant to be an American monster movie that made me dislike it.

I'm just going to leave it at that. If you read the previous Cloverfield thread, you already know my thoughts on it.

Didn't they get new batteries at a electronics store... Wait maybe I'm mistaken. I've only seen the movie once.

He looted the electronics store for a new battery for his phone, not the camera, ironically enough.

This coming from someone who liked Harry Potter which failed at EVERYTHING you mentioned. Sorry, had to get a dig on HP some time soon or I would explode.

Unfortunately I've not actually seen the whole movie all the way through, although the part I did see (The first ten minutes or so in Media Studies) seemed pretty interesting.

I had not seen or heard of a movie before where the entire thing was done from the perspective of someone who happened to have a camera at a party. Despite the fact people want films to expand and play with genres a little, but whenever a film does that people blame it for trying something different. People had similar thoughts on the film Vantage Point, but looked too deeply into its factual errors.

I'll try to watch it soon...

Like it. Only enough to be seeing twice in a short amount of time, however.

I probably was only a big fan because I followed the virals on the internet, like:

-The character's MySpaces
-A site explaining the origin of the monster
-Tagruato's website (parent company of Slusho)
-TidoWave's site (The anti-Tagruato company supporting the monster), and
-1-18-08.com

These were a huge help in understanding the movie, BUT! I sould probably head on over to the regualr thread if I wanted to discuss it further.

*bump*

So, I have sort of mixed feelings about the movie. I have only seen it once, and that was with Riff Trax (the new incarnation of MST3K). I enjoyed watching the movie because of the commentary that they were making, but otherwise I feel that the movie was complete shit. I think the first half was boring as all hell, and I think that in the end the guy with the camera was an idiot. I guess this technically puts me into the "I think this was a bad movie" category, but then again I did enjoy watching it because of the joys of making fun of bad movies. So which selection should I choose for the poll?

Well... it's your choice.

It's like Rocky Horror. It's an all right movie, but made better with site gags and audience participation.

A lot of movies are made better when taken in the context of enjoying them for just how terrible they really are, but too many people took Cloverfield too seriously. Just like Titanic, The English Patient, Armageddon, The Sixth Sense, and to a lesser (or maybe greater?) extent World Trade Center. When all those were big, if you made fun of them, people just thought you had no sense of taste or what have you.

Seems like any time I bad-mouthed Cloverfield in its salad days, people thought I was just being a picky bitch about it.

Then again, the converse could be said for my stances on some terrible films out there. I was a HUGE fan of the Mummy franchise and went to see The Scorpion King in theaters. HATED it. Felt my little fandom was ruined for it.

Then when it came out on DVD, I went to a friend's house where he and his father were watching it and making little comments about it here and there. Suddenly I was really enjoying it. Learned to love the damn film even.

Like I originally implied I guess. It's sometimes not a matter of the film's quality or merit that garners your affection, but rather the circumstances of your seeing it--who you saw it with, things like that. Guaranteed there are A LOT of movies out there that are outstanding if you watch 'em intoxicated.
