I would like to tie a fucking yellow goddamn ribbon around all of these SUV driving asshole's necks. We get the fucking point. Your ribbons aren't doing anything.

Don't people realize how vapid and plastic they are? I'm sorry that I don't support our troops in a crusade for... whatever it is. It certainly isn't freedom. How about a white ribbon? What ever happened to the idea of peace? Maybe a Martin Luther King sticker or something. THAT is freedom protection.

That's all. Now I await my stalking/beating by military thugs.

If you're in the military or have an opinion on the matter, I'd be interested in hearing it. I don't hate you. I'm just curious how you reassure yourselves that what you're doing is right, when it's obvious the people in charge of things have very tainted interests. How can you be their tools? How can you die for them and

...

I can understand not supporting our president's decision; I don't support any of his decisions. But the soldiers fighting over there did not choose this war. They are part of the armed forces. When the president starts a war, they go fight. Not much of a choice.

My stepdad's over in Afghanistan, fighting for people like this? People who don't appreciate the sacrifice our soldiers are making?

Maybe we should send you over there, and see if that changes your mind.

Agreed. I don't know anyone in the war, and I definitely don't agree with it, but the fact that people would refuse to support our troops, when they are going wherever someone tells them to and risking their lives, is kind of disgusting. "I support our troops" doesn't mean you spport their cause, it means you support them as humans, and for the sacrifice they're making.

Wait a fucking second, It's okay to think war is bad.

It's okay to think going to war is bad.

It's okay to think the US armed forces is a corrupt and evil thing.

But the second I say I don't support our troops. I'm doing something bad? Riiight..

I DO support our troops when they're doing something as noble as fighting for my rights and freedom.

In this case they are doing neither so I don't support their actions in this war at all.

I don't support teh Armed Forces. I don't have anything really against them but I don't support them nor do I really care what they think they're fighting for. This is about politics and manuevering ina massive popularity contest from hel that is just fucking stupid.

What I'm about to say may offend someone. And frankly, I don't care.

I cannot believe I am reading this shit. Do you think I support the war? I don't. I think it's a waste of our time and our money. Now, maybe it's because I have family over there, but I don't see any good reason to not support our soldiers. Ah, but never mind that they're risking their lives while all you are doing is sitting on your ass protesting on a message board, never mind that they don't choose what wars to fight in because they don't HAVE a choice in the matter, Bush is wrong so why bother supporting people who have no relation whatsoever? I'll let that last sentence sink in for a moment before I continue.

*waits for a few minutes*

In case it didn't sink in the first two times - earlier in this post, and in my previous post - THE SOLDIERS DID NOT CHOOSE THIS WAR, SO DO NOT HOLD IT AGAINST THEM. Now, was that clear enough, or do I need to throw in some <font size=7> tags?

Edit: Ah, I almost forgot.

My parents are about as anti-Bush as you can get without being terrorists, yet my stepdad's over there.

Taken from an MSN conversation, though capitalization was fixed.

Jobes, I see that you are passionate about your support, but you did not need to do that. This is a warning, since I do not give a rat's ass why you're doing it, but flaming is NOT, repeat, NOT allowed in this forum, nor this board. Please re-read the rules of the forum. Thank you.

Now, to my post...

I hate Bush, I hate the war, I hate any war, and I generally do not like Bush-supporters or republicans (blame many idiotic "conservative" teenagers that I have the misfortune of knowing). I'm not saying I do not support the troops. However, I don't like the yellow ribbon stickers on the cars. Why? Very simple, it's become a trend. People, at least around here, are buying them more because everyone else is than because they support the troops... it was the same thing after 9/11 with the little American flags. Manufacturers are just using politics and people's obsession with trends to cash in... and the "I'm patriotic" trend has now taken a new form: yellow ribbon stickers.

As for my stance on the troops: "Support our troops, bring them home."

Gosh do you think you could keep the swearing down, was it really necessary

Now it was the troops decision to join the army in the first place, but it wasn’t there decision to pick which country they will be fighting. I don’t support the war, I don’t support the fighting, and I don’t support the troops, but I do sympathise for them. They do risk there lives each day being over there and it’s sad sometimes to think of the sacrifices the government makes just to try and be ahead in the game. But it's life and it's not about to change anytime soon.

*sighs* well, at least that was tolerable.

Have you considered that maybe, just MAYBE there are other reasons people join the army?

Ah, of course not. You're too busy protesting to think about the other reasons to join. Do you think those soldiers like killing people? I begin to wonder, considering your apathy about them (with the exception of Deesse, whose name I will not bother spelling properly due to laziness). An example of another motive? We need the money. Mom can't work because of her back, my grandmother's too old (the "grand" portion implies that), and there's few high-paying jobs around here. Dad took his last real option, joining the National Guard.

So, consider that before you call the army a gang of murderers. Consider that before you attack the armed forces. Consider that before you - you know what? Fuck it. Logic is lost on some of you.

Well Tamarin Calanis it was still your dad's decision to join, even it is for money or not. I'm sure too that the majority of soldiers who joined the army don’t like killing others, but they joined the army, knowing well enough that the time might come around that they might actually have to take their training into action and kill or wond someone.

In no way did I “attack” the forces, I simply said that I didn’t support them, it’s my decision whether I want to support them or not, fighting and war has never been my thing and it’s something I don’t hold an interest or concern for.

And Tamarin, I know people in the military as well. I still protest the war, there is nothing wrong with protesting the war. Wouldn't you like your step-dad to come home already? I am by no means apathetic reguarding the troops, I want them to come home and not be killed in a desert halfway across the world when they do not have to. I'm not going to get into why I'm against the war here, since that it not the point of the thread. I just stated a simple fact that the ribbons are just money-makers for the company that makes them.

To further that point, I've seen other ribbon stickers now, not yellow nor POW/MIA or even KIA... I mean funny bumpersticker ribbons. Saw them at Spencer's Gifts yesterday... so you see it's just becoming another trend. Half the people with those stickers do not support the troops, it's just a cool new trend to have ribbon stickers on you gas guzzling SUV or your suped-up rice burner Honda. The joys of living in southern California.

The "just doing their job" excuse was also used for the Nazis.

But one fact remains. People know exactly what they're signing up for when they join the army.

I refuse to support that in any way shape or form. I really don't give a damn who says that makes me an asshole, a prick or an idiot.
I'm sure some soldiers are very good people. But that doesn't change a damn thing that they decided to join an evil and corrupt system and to help forward their advances in other countries.

War is never a just thing. Because war is NEVER about saving lives. Just viciously taking them for the evil leaders who they devoted their lives to.

So pardon me if I don't support these men and women. I'll be busy wearing a shirt that says "support peace, not our troops."

I hate the yellow ribbon. It's stupid. People can't be creative anymore and think of their own ways to support our troops? No we all must conform to a yellow ribbon.

Yes, Elara, it would be nice if he came home. But to me, that's irrelevent at this time, as he's not home right now nor will he be for a few months.

And yes, there's other ways to support our troops, if people would stop being so damn moronic/lazy and actually try to think of one. We send stuff over to dad every once in a while, maybe every other week or so, and that's usually shared between all the soldiers there where dad is. That's actually supporting them, not just displaying some idiotic ribbon.

Jin, what planet do you live on? If you don't see the importance of having an army, then it can't possibly be Earth. It is human nature to desire expansion into other countries. Therefore, if for no other reason, we need one to keep people out of our country. How is that, by itself, "evil and corrupt"? So what do you propose? All countries get rid of their millitary? Please don't tell me you're THAT foolish/stupid/naive.

The American armed forces are corrupt and evil.

And to a much lesser degree armed forces in general are corrupt and evil. Not because of themselves but because of the countries they represent.

Kind of a catch 22 like communism. *shrug*

I know more than a few people in the armed forces including friends and friends of my family.

If I ever felt the need to help serve and protect my country, I'll become a cop like my grandfather and late uncle.
If and/or when the draft comes back.. I'm moving to another country.

1) Why isn't Abu Ghraib a valid answer?

2) What about all the other cases of cruelty?

3) What about Guantanamo Bay?

4) What about both invasions of Iraq?

5) What about the recruiting of teenagers at schools and malls?

6) What about from the very beginning of their killing of the ORIGINAL americans? You know. The native americans.

Heh, The list really keeps going.

I support peace, not our troops. End of story.

You don't get it Jin-you can be the biggest peacenik in the world and still support our troops. Why? Because they are human beings. You know, for someone who is so interested in equality and acceptance, you are pretty prejudiced against soldiers.
