Similarities between God and Santa?

White hair maybe?

They both reward you for being good and punish you for being bad.

Not much else is coming to mind.

I figured that was what you meant, Cairoi, but some people do have those crazy conspiracy theories that I mentioned, so I had to make sure. Glad you're not one of them.

There are more parallels to Christmas and Yule than anything else, y'know
In fact, I'm pretty certain that Deck the Halls is a Pagan song...

Two omniscient old men who are immortal and judge you on your behaviour. They live in places of pure white, living with eternal servants. THey are very lenient to common man and wish the good for everyone, even people with bad pasts.

And, they are fat. Ever here this song:

"What if God was one of us..."

Okay okay, I'm stating this now: Keep the age old religious argument out of this... I mean ALL religions. I don't want to hear about Santa/Jesus or how Christians ripped off Yule (though they did). I'm sick and tired of every debate thread I read turning into a fucking relgious debate!

Commercialism, that is what this is about. Try looking at Rogue's post, notice how she tries to stay on topic? Let's try that. I know that religion has to be mention in a thread on this topic, but it's not the central theme.

... and by the way Rogue, I also noticed the extra early onset of Christmas stuff this year. I think I saw some stuff up in July actually... sad really.

Good grief, tell me about it. I don't know how Rosy can stand Christmas music sometimes. Years of Christmas muzak, year-round, could piss off anybody.

I was a bit annoyed when I was at the Lakewood mall and there were "Holiday gift idea" signs and other crap like that up during the summer and some of the stores were already playing Christmas music.

I'm afraid to even go near the mall right now, freaking mad house! During the time most people are at work it's not so bad, but yeah.

I have to say that while it is commercialized, not to the dregree you all are making it sound. Sure, people get overly stressed out about getting presents, getting a christmas tree, ect.

However, that's because of what christmas is about. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ. But then, only christians would be able to celebrate it...

So, people thought that they might as well make it so that more than one person can join in, and make a bit of money off it too. This makes it so that everyone will join in, and people also go to hard work to make their own presents for their children.

Next, a few corporations began making it so that rather than go to hard work to make them, you can buy them. More companies did that, and advertising grew.

However, that's just the history. My real point is that without commericalization, then christmas would only be a holiday for us christians. Instead, it is changed so that everyone else can also participate. Without commercialization, christmas would more than likely not even be taken off for work or school.

So yeah, its a neccesary evil.

I could go without participating in a holiday that has absolutely no religious signifigance whatsoever to me, actually. And it shouldn't be difficult for anyone else.

I honestly can't believe you're defending that.

Most religions have a holiday right now. Yule and Christmas are the same thing for the most part (Yule is older), Hanukah (I know I'm spelling in wrong) is an 8 day celebration, I forget what the Muslims have, but I think they have one right now... and then there is Kwanza, but yeah... that was created by a professor at Cal State Long Beach, so that is besides the point.

The beginning of winter has always been a time of celebration, of coming together and sharing the warmth of the hearth... but people have forgotten that. Gift giving went from things like cookies and sweaters to game systems and televisions. Competitiveness and greed, as well as the need to outdo everyone else has ruined a beautiful season. Advertising starts in July and makes you feel like you're a horrible person if you don't get that diamond necklace for your wife or that leather sports jacket for your uncle, or whatever. Giving someone candy is seen as "cheap" now, even if they like candy; and everyone feels that their holiday is "ruined" if they don't get what they want or if what they wanted to get someone is unattainable.

I'm not exactly defending it, I'm saying that all holidays will be marketed, many times over. There is a lot of it, and it makes christmas a bit more enjoyable. People will notice it more that way. It also severly helps out economy. Many stores and companies depend on christmas for all their money. Were christmas to disappear, so would all of these companies, unemployment rates would increase, and many thing similiar to that would happen.

So, it is still a neccesary evil, for our economy. However, people would do well to spend more time with family.

Hmm...

Well,to me that just ruined what I was going to say. :hrugs::

To me, Christmas isnt about the whole presents and giving...but I know no one else wants to hear where Christmas came from...

Well, Not saying im taking offence, but im also tierd of seeing people blaming christians for this and that. I mean, im Christian and I diddnt do those things people mentioned, does that make me a bad person? Meh, im going to just answer the whole Commercial question. (Oh and by the way, I dont have a Religion, I have a Relationship; Theres a difference ^.^ Hope I diddnt upset anybody!)

Yes: I do believe Christmas is being too commercial, People just need to realize that its also about caring. Not the gifts...

See? Was that so hard? We all know where the holiday came from, some know it's roots better than others. That is the past though, and I'm asking about the present.

I know that our economy depends on the holiday for most of it's money now, but it didn't used to. What happened? Why must we now have our economy dependant on how many little plastic toys and candies are sold before December 24th?

I think everyone's forgotten about Boxing Day though. That's the biggest problem. The day AFTER Christmas is just as bad as the week before and the day of.

But on topic of Christmas...

People all learn to give and not recieve. Giving isn't just presents but it's also friendship and family.

It's not survival of the fittest out there. It's more of a chioce between good or bad. If they give that dollar to the santas or not. The question shouldn't be "Have I gotten anything this year?" it's "Have I actually helped someone out?"

Actually Elara, it was started when people mostly supported themselves. As soon as the idea of selling it happened, people realized that they needed a big boost to be able to keep their companies active. So, there was no "before". Christmas, not toy companies, was before.

You lost me on that last part. Care to explain what you meant? I know that toy companies didn't come before the holiday.

Careful what you Say Elara...now someone is going to bring this conversation to a clashing halt by...uh oh...Religion...

:: Shakes becuase is scared that it may be Jynxed ::

I can tell you how everything is going way to commercial. Everyone is damn near greedy in one way...or another. Honestly, as the years go by, everyone slowly forgets the treasures of everyday life. The gift of carin for everybody, not those damn Toys, or Gift Cirtificiates (Damn spelling).

Now to answer the question to the thread title....

im not really in the "Holiday Spirit"...im more into the Christmas spirit than I am in the "holiday" spirit...

But honestly though? I dont think everyone in my family is into the spirit...I dunno why...

Who gives a flying chocolate monkey fuck about christmas?

I've rarely had a GOOD christmas. Actually I can't honestly say I ever have
now that I think about it. Got into a car wreck that killed my grandmother
on Christmas DAY 2000 and just this morning had the love of my life rip
my heart to shreds that had me crying on the phone to my mom, who
has NEVER heard me cry since I was 8 or so.

Christmas is supposed to be about family and friends and loved ones. It's not
about presents or food or parties and getting fucking shit faced drunk.

So like I said.
