Before Pat could secure himself into a better position, he noticed movement from behind the fallen AeroTrain car. He readied his rifle, but instead felt a presence over his shoulder.

"Hello," said the rebel-garbed woman, "I believe you have a question for me concerning your Isis device you were testing last week."

"How did you..."

"Shh, just allow me to answer your question," she sat down next to the supine Pat and sipped on her tea cup, "your device is quite impressive, Agent Betts, but you've caused more than you think you have."

"How so?" he asked rolling onto his back to stare at the thunderously ominous smoke clouds above.

"Do you remember how Terran was destroyed?"

"Yes, we were educated on that many times. The higher beings felt their experiment had gone awry, and decided to terminate life on the planet. At first, the overall temperatures began to rise slowly over a few decades causing a great flood of the planet. Those that survived were later ravaged by an ice-age, and those that survived that were exposed to extreme periods of famine. After all life had ceased, the planet was left to die, and ultimately, was destroyed by the higher beings." Pat rolled back onto his stomach, "But what does that have to do with my Isis device?"

"I see they continue with the misleadings," she set down her tea cup watching a fellow rebel run across the sand only to be dispatched by Lee across the way, "Patrick, your Isis device has started something that no one will notice for at least 40 years. I will not tell you now, but if needed, you will find out when the time is right."

Pat sat up, "What did I start? When I shot the initial beam into space, did it trigger something disasterous?"

Celeste stood, "I can't tell you now." She stepped off the platform, and disappeared. After reappearing near the AeroTrain car, next to her fellow fallen rebel, she lounged and contemplated the future. Pat returned to his lying position, rifle trained at the ruins. Lee chimed in over the intercom.

"What she tell you?"

"Who?" Pat shifted slightly.

"Celeste," Lee replied, "I saw her over there."

"Nothing important."

"Everything is important with her," Lee shifted slightly, standing at his position, "I think she's the fourth helix."

"Celeste? I don't think so." Pat caught sight of a large Taroxian standing near the exit of the Paradox Island-Mainland SubTrain tunnel. "I believe our new agent has arrived."

Lee turned to face the tunnel, "I believe you're correct." He dropped down to greet the Taroxian. Pat scurried down from the rooftop of the Mass Transit Center, darting across the sand.

Celeste watched the parting of the smoke clouds, glancing at a pale light thousands of miles away from them. "Oh, Patrick, if only you knew what you have started."

"I will not tell you now, but if needed....." You said "know". Just pointing that out, otherwise tis good. So do we ever truly find out how Terran was distroyed? And finally we can get the discription of the early T'om!

Lee had always been one of the taller people in his groups. But, standing next to the Taroxian made him feel incredibly dwarfed; Pat even moreso. The Taroxian leaned up against the pylons of the tunnel, carrying a phased energy weapon--much larger than anything either Lee or Pat could carry on their own--and visually inspected both agents. He was quite large, broad shouldered, and heavily bearded. His dirty blond hair draped over his shoulders, centering his strong frame over his thick legs. Unlike his outward appearance, he spoke in the soothing voice known to be possessed by his race's lack of vocal cord strength. This rendered him into a being of few words. He held out a big hand in a gesture for greeting, and clearly announced his name, "T'om".

Lee extended his hand forth, deploying a layer of armor, "I'm Agent A," he motioned towards a relunctant Pat, "and that's Agent B. We should move to a more secluded area." Pat nodded at the Taroxian, and followed them both up the sand towards the remains of the generator building nearest the AeroTrain track.

"Agent A," T'om spoke after setting down his weapon, "I am to understand that we are assigned partners for the rest of the war; that our efforts will aide in the bringing of peace to this land, and possibly the well-being of the meta-humans."

"That is correct. For the time being, we'll," he motioned between Pat and himself, "keep our codenames until we feel comfortable with you. We're just trained to be wary of anything and everyone. I hope you do understand that."

"He's a double," Pat declared, weapon raised and trained on the Taroxian.

"What?" Lee pushed down Pat's weapon, and turned to address the Taroxian, "Whom do you work for?"

T'om picked up his weapon, charged and aimed at both agents, "I work for myself. A mercenary for hire. In this case, it's Harbor West. It may be Special Ops next month. I never know. But, I do know that you both are Special Ops as well."

"I told you," Pat charged his weapon.

"No, idiot, put that down," Lee smacked Pat's weapon and continued speaking to the Taroxian, "T'om, if you know that we're double agents, how do we know that we can trust you with our cause?"

T'om lowered his weapon and glanced towards the untouched Paradox Island, "I would like to see that society flourish. I would like to see the para-human ideals fail. I am an asset to your mission."

Lee glanced at an irate Pat, "What do you think?"

"I say we shoot him, and go back to work."

Lee punched Pat, wrestling him to the ground, "How 'bout I just shoot you, and get back to work?"

Pat pushed Lee off him, and sat up, "Welcome aboard, T'om." T'om awkwardly smiled, and the three of them disappeared into the night amongst the ruins. Celeste, having perched herself above them on the AeroTrain track, merely watched as events unfolded; monitoring the night sky for signs of the future and hoping that time would just pass more fluidly around her. It didn't.

Wait, so she can't do that at will? Interesting.

T'om is described really well, though it is interesting to see Lee's easy acceptance of him and Pat's instant change of opinion.

She stood up, tattered garb flowing in the never-ending supply of artificial breeze, and stepped off the AeroTrain track. Rather than fall to the sand below, she floated quietly and softly to the ground encased in a vivid, blue aura. She closed her eyes, opening them again deep within the toppled remains of a financial sector building. The smoldering remains warmed her body as she stood on top of a giant marbled column that used to sustain the archway over the main entrance. The trio of agents crouched within the far wall discussing their planned target for the night. A large grouping of rebel leaders were to have a small meeting on the eastern outskirts of town. They were the large motivators of an otherwise unorganized force.

T'om sat on the bodies of freshly slain rebels while Pat perched himself in a position to attack either agent or anyone coming in from the outside. Lee stood in a corner, semi-lit in an orange hue from the smoldering fires; his crimson eyes captured every movement of the lights as he spoke. Pat stood from his crouch and walked up to Lee.

"Your eyes, there's something different about them," he stared intently into them.

Lee pulled back, "What? They're the same as they've always been. Take your position."

Pat leaned back, "No, they're not. There's something more," he paused for a moment, "you've got nanotech, don't you?"

Lee mentally refocused the implanted circuitry in his eyes, "Maybe. Now, take your position, or I'll show just how painful my surgery was."

Pat nodded and returned to his position. T'om raised his arm to speak, "Are you sure you two are okay with each other? I mean, if you're not comfortable working with each..."

"Comfort isn't a priority," Lee snarled, "but our success in the name of the meta-humans is a high priority. And, for that we must weaken the initial threat--the rebellion. After that, we take down Harbor West from the inside so that Paradox can prosper. Then, and only then, can we make comfort a priority. Understood, Taroxian?"

"Very," he lowered his arm again and reclined against a wall, "so that's our directive tonight."

Pat pointed towards the eastern areas, "Rebellion leaders. I take blood badges home tonight."

Lee smirked, "Right. We meet at rendezvous in fifteen minutes. Move out!" Lee flipped backward onto the fallen column, landing next to Celeste. "Enjoy the show?"

She looked deeply into his enhanced eyes, finding that little inner child she had witnessed grow up years before, "This isn't you. You're not this heartless."

He knelt down slightly, "I know. But, I have to do this now." Before he could flip to a higher portion of the fallen roof, she grasped onto his pant leg.

"If you don't stop this now, you'll never grow out of the cycle."

He shook her hand loose, and knelt down to her, "I'll be fine," then disappeared onto the roof.

"You'd think that, dear," she whispered to herself dropping into the rubble to watch Pat scurry down the street. "I hope both of you come to that vital realization sooner rather than later."

The night was remotely calm. She had spent much of the latter of the night receiving word of the attack on the eastern portion of the city; learning that three Harbor West agents dispatched all of the rebellion leaders; realizing that they had all succeeded in escalating the war. A few members of the para-human faction gathered near the fallen AeroTrain car to mourn their dead and discuss matters of the War.

"I think we should stop," started a young-looking woman, the ravages of hunger and war reflected on her face, "I mean, I believe in our ideals, but we're losing momentum. I think we should go underground, and resurface when we've gained more strength."

"So, you want to waste three years of our lives and struggles by backing down like a coward?" spoke another older man, leaning against the AeroTrain car, "I didn't lose my wife and children in this struggle to back down to San Angeles government."

Celeste stood huddled among the others, "Maybe it is time to back down until we gain more power to rise up again."

The man walked over to her, "Maybe it is time that we took the city and planet for ourselves, as it rightfully should be," he turned to face the small gathering, "do we want a planet infested with alien outsiders, or do we want a para-human planet!?" The small gathering cheered after his statement.

Celeste moved closer to the man, extending a hand to touch his rough face. The man shuddered slightly, while staring into her eyes. "Would you like to live to see the fruits of your efforts?" she whispered. He nodded. "Then, back down." He shoved her down, and ran up the sandy banks yelling war cries of the rebellion. The others followed while Celeste lay watching the stars flicker in and out of the smoky clouds. She sat up, watching as Harbor West agents descended on the group, effectively wiping them out before they could reach the city limits.

A familiar pair of legs landed next to her, weapon pressing on the back of her head, "What have I started?"

"You'd never do it. It's true that you don't have what it takes. You can blindly kill for your agencies' ideals, but you wouldn't be able to kill either me nor Lee," she slowly stood to face her adversary.

"What makes you so sure, Celeste?"

"You didn't shoot Lee that afternoon, you didn't shoot him this evening, and you're not going to shoot him in the future. You may be the second ranking Harbor West agent, but that means nothing. And, you know it doesn't," she pushed aside his weapon and moved closer to him. His eyes welled with anger and fear.

"What have I started, Celeste? When will this all be over?"

"I can't tell you that. But, you need to stop this. For the combined good of yourself, your fellow agents, and the future of Earth II. There are far more important matters to address at the moment than a silly rebellion war between like peoples," she shoved Pat to the ground, kicking his weapon out of his hands. He sat on the beach, staring up past her to the smoldering remains of the city.

"I can't stop it. I'm just a pawn."

"No, but you can influence Lee. Whether he knows it or not, he controls much of the outcome of this War," she forced him to watch the darkened silhouette of the far-off island, "do you want that to succeed, or fail?"

"Succeed," he whispered.

"Then do your part, and I will help you and him in the long run."

He gathered his weapon and stood up, "Are you the fourth helix, Celeste?" He turned to face her, but she had disappeared. A sigh left his tired body. He lazily dragged his feet up the embankment heading towards the tunnel. Lee dropped in on him, walking closely behind him.

"What did she say to you?"

Pat immediately turned, confronting him face to face, "Couldn't you hear her with that enhanced body of yours? That nanotech and built-in armor couldn't help you?"

Lee shoved him down, "What did she say to you?"

Pat sweeped his leg, then flipped back onto his feet, "Nothing."

Lee flipped back onto his feet, "I don't believe you."

"Then don't believe me," he pushed past him, "we have rebellion factions to destroy."

Lee grabbed Pat's arm as he passed, "I know she's not part of the rebellion. I know she's telling you things that I'm not supposed to know. But, I will find out."

Pat forced his arm loose, shooting Lee's foot, "Maybe you will, maybe you won't."

Lee stood, foot intact and smoldering on a visible layer of deployed armor. He smirked, "You better, if you know what's good for you."

Chapter III - Blistering Winter

Lee stood amid the destruction of the past four years, watching as crews worked to rebuild the recaptured western section of the city. Harbor West had succeeded in regaining control of the larger portion of the city using a meager ten of the original thirty special agents. Many lives had been lost, with much blood tainting the brittle streets of San Angeles and the crushed spirits of both factions.

Celeste fled with the the few civil minded rebels to the newly populated island of Paradox. With the resuscitation of the western portion of San Angeles, and the rebuilding beginning as the few attacks raged further inland, the San Angeles government completed construction on the Paradox-San Angeles tunnel and rebuilt the fallen AeroTrain tracks.

On the tree-lined shores of the fledgling city of Oakridge stood a very annoyed Pat, cradling his pulse weapon in his gloved hands watching the waves of the Great Ocean lap gently over the shores below him. A few of the Paradoxian denizens worked behind him--people he had battled against just a few years earlier--building humble homes to help build a future society of eco-harmony. He was a changed man, forged through the hardships of battle and justified murder, an outed Paradox Special Ops agent, and the mutation of a bitter youth serving in the shadow of the better man.

Across the Ocean, in a clear view of the towering mountains and sprawling plains of Paradox Island, Lee walked down the rebuilt streets of western San Angeles watching as an AeroTrain sailed into the SubTrain tunnel on its way towards the Oakridge station. He was still the number one agent for Harbor West, and continued to serve as a secret agent for Special Ops.

Exactly six months before, the movements of the war had escalated fueled by the desires of either side to succeed. Caught in the middle of two ideals, Pat faced a new task of creating the ultimate energy weapon. With the Taroxian T'om in tow, he traveled to the northern regions of the Mainland to San Cremento to seek out a famed meta-human naturist.

Sleepy, continuing tomorrow. With a possible rewrite.
