I think St. Patrick's Day is probably the single most offensive holiday of the year.

Why?

I'm 85% Irish. My father and I have actual studied our lineage and found that he was, in fact, 100% Irish, and derived from Irish nobility. My mom too, is mostly Irish, though she does have a little bit of French in there, and an infentesimle (sp... whatever) amount of Italian. Be this as it may, I'm still pretty in tact with my Irish side, and definetly moreso than anything else in me. Unlike most people, I celebrate this fact everyday. When people go about on St. Patrick's Day, saying it is THEIR holiday just because they are 1/16th Irish, I actually get really offended. I started getting this way last year, when I actually found out about all this stuff about me, but I didn't really voice it. I mean, this was BEFORE St. Patrick's Day; when I'd hear a person go "Oh, I'm getting drunk tonight. You know, it's the Irish in me". Or "I really liked potatos. You know, it's the Irish in me." I'd laugh it off, cause it really isn't anything.

But last St. Patricks Day, I almost went complete apeshit on a few people. I have two examples of people I hate on St. Patrick's Day.

1) "Yo wuddup. Because I'm like, a quarter Irish, me and my homies are getting TANKED tonight!!! YEAH!!!"

"That's great..." says I.

"Yeah!! You're Irish, right? You should come with us!! Celebrate man, its a party-holiday!!!"

"No I do-"

"DURRRRRRRRRR I'M FULL IRISH TODAY (despite the fact that I'm full German on Oktoberfest, Black on Kwanzaa, and Native American on Thanksgiving!)"

2) "Tee hee! Do you like my 'Kiss Me I'm Irish' shirt and my Shamrock deedlybobs on my head and my green shoes and my green shorts and my green Mardi Gras beads and my shamrock necklace and my-"

"Go away." says I.

"Ohhh, I get it! You have a hang over, you couldn't wait for St. Patrick's Day! I'm only 1/16th so I could, but you guys must really like this holiday. It's today, not last night! Uh-oh, better get away before you puke on me! I'd hate to be YOUR wife, black and blue doesn't match with green!"

I seriously talked to people like that last year. It made me hate the fact that St. Patrick's Day has become a day of getting overly drunk (since you have a REASON to, you're "IRISH" and its St. Patricks Day!) and a day of "Celebration of your Culture!" which is fucking bullshit. 1/16th doesn't mean anything. When you're running around in full on Irish paraphenalia being a full on bigot, I don't even consider you human...

God, I hate St. Patrick's Day.

If it gives you any peace of mind......

I will be getting tanked tomorrow. Not because its St.Patrick's day (though that does contribute) but because its a friday. St.Patrick's day just means the beer I drink will be green.

I don't think that helped though.....But I do understand where you're coming from.

The whole Irish Stereotype on Saint Patty's day is damn annoying nowadays, especially if someone tries to pinch you because you're not wearing green.

Like you said Voltron, most Irish people are at most 1/16, I'm 1/8 but I wouldn't feel any different about this holiday if I was 100% Irish.

I need to buy somre more soda bread, that stuff is bitchin'.

I can see where your comming from. I'm fully Mexican (despite being born in the US people) and it's the same thing for Cinco the Mayo (5th of may for those who don't know). I don't get quite as worked up as you Voltron, but it denfetly annoys me when I hear that, especially since half the population who "celebrates" cinco the mayo don't even know there is something actually being celebrated and the other half assume it's Mexico's Independence Day, when in reality we are celebrating the Battle of Puebla which was an significant battle in our history.

Sadly, nothing much we can do aside from tolerate it and maybe try to educate those who can see beyond the booze, but at least you know your not alone in your feelings.

I'm going to a concert on St. Patrick's Day actually. Sure, I'll be drinking, but that's because it's a two drink minimum at the concert hall and it's a renfair band that mainly sings drinking songs.

I'm a little under a third Irish (not totally sure... lots of Scottish and German as well as finite other stuff), and even I get annoyed at people like that... of course I do the pinching thing because it's a fun tradition (sneaking up on mom while she's sleeping to get her); but I don't do it to people I don't know because it's messed up. What most people fail to realize is that the holiday is not about drinking, it's both a Catholic holiday and a cultural holiday honoring Ireland's history... how the connection to beer got started I'm not really sure... but it does annoy the fuck out of me when people think that it's all about drinking.

The connection is... Because it's Irish. (Sadly enough most sterieo types have some truth to them (And the Irish do drink lots ))

I'm a little over 1/4 Irish. In fact my family crest is Irish.

And I will not be celliberating this holiday.

Honestly voltron... I think the people in your examples are just idiots. Stupid, stupid people. It's just so happens drinking brings out the stupider people, and drops their IQ a few more notchess.

Yay! Rant thread!

I will be at school tomorrow (today) and at work in the afternoon. I will not be getting (as Xeo put it) "tanked". Being a(n ir)responsible adult, I have commitments that require my state of sobriety all day.

In conclusion...what?

I remember hearing about St. Patrick last year around this time. Last year on
St. Patricks day I was setting out to get tanked. Not because I have a little irish
background, (which I'm not completely sure of even) not because of the holiday
itself.

Just because my friend was old enough to buy beer finally so he got a case of
Guiness and we hung out and drank. He later stabbed himself in the leg while
he was drunk off his ass but that's a different story entirely.

Voltron, getting pissed isn't really going to help at all so why're you wasting your
valuable time and energy. I understand it's irritating as all fuck but try not to let that
kinda shit get to you, you're too young to develop an ulcer ok dude?

On a side note I have heard full irish people happily invite those with no irish
background at all to get good and tanked in the spirit of that holiday. Saying,
"Everyone's Irish today," simply in the point of being friendly and celebrating.

It's not ENTIRELY a bad thing, just the moron's like you've mentioned ruin things
for everyone else frequently.

Since people are pointing out how Irish they are...I'll say this. I'm unsure of how Irish I am. My great grandmother was 100% Irish...but my great grandfather had a great deal of English in him and a tad bit of Native American...then Irish and Italian blood from my dad's side. **shrugs**

Anywho...I see your point. To be honest, I hate St. Patty's Day too. I mostly hate it because it's not a ritual to carry my father home from the bar that day. However, it's NEVER as simple as *enter bar, drag father to car, drive him home*. Shit always goes on. And as I imagine in many other big cities as well...St. Patrick's Day in the city of Philadelphia sucks monkey balls. A good percentage of the city gets plastered that night. I'll endthat subject on that note.

Otherwise, the holiday pisses me off for the same reasons as you Voltron. I don't really let it get to me so much though. **shrugs** But I guess that's because I have my hands full with other issues anyways.
