Well that was a lot of the story, but I don't think it was what it was about. I mean, the beginning of the movie is narrated by Tommy Lee Jones' character and the movie goes own after the death of Lou Ellen and ends with Jones' character again. |

96 billion on education last year. 600 billion on military. That is over 6x more on military in one year. Does that seem a bit wrong to you? Explain how ending the war that we never should have started in the first place is going to shaft you. Have you been sent out of the country at all? No, you haven't. You still get your pay check, you still get your GI Bill. Look back at your schools. When was the last time the library was updated, the textbooks? How much of a budget did they get? How current was the computer lab? My school, and every school in the district? Got an update around 2000 because of the Y2K scare. Library was practically non-existant to anyone over the age of 8. My high school? Small, very little research material and almost nothing published after 1996 unless it was English literature. Our science department had equipment and models made in the 60s. Our spare textbooks in my world history class were so old they showed the U.S.S.R. as a country still! As far as college goes, tuition has gone up every semester for the past three years. A lot of people can't afford to go anymore because financial aid has not changed to meet the demands of this tuition increase. When I graduated high school, full time at CSULB was around $1000 for full time, less if I remember right. Now it's $1600 for full time and it will be increasing again next semester, and the semester after that... because we don't get enough funding. The schools don't get enough money, so they put the burden on the students who really can't afford to pay. There was a strike at my community college because the teachers hadn't gotten a raise in nearly six years, but the administrators had. Same thing nearly happened at CSULB my first semester. Oh, and the teachers have to supply their own chalk, markers, copies, etc because the schools "can't afford to pay for them anymore". One of my professors last year resorted to hiding spare chalk in the classroom just to make sure she would have some. This is at a major university! When I say I want more to go to education I don't just mean teacher's paychecks, because unlike you I am thinking of more than my own personal interests. I want students to be able to have access to accurate books and be taught in safe and modern facilities. I want people to be able to afford a college education without having to plunge themselves into debt while working four jobs so that they barely have time to do the homework. But to do that the schools need more money. Yes, it would be nice if the teachers made more as well but that isn't the most important issue.

That is the case often, but there are also many situations where budget cuts are preventing updates. Money going to the schools should be regulated so it gets spent how it is supposed to and not used to increase the administrator's paychecks!

And that still doesn't change the fact that we spend way too much on the military... hell we spend more than the rest of the world combined! China, the second biggest spender on military budget spends approximately 10x less than us. Why so much on war? Why? If we cut even 5% we could pay our debt to the UN and have more money to fund the rest of the programs in this country. And, ya know, maybe we can work on diplomacy to solve conflicts instead of invading other countries. Better than education, how about universal health care? We could have that. We could have both, so not only would our children be healthy they would be as smart as kids in the rest of the world. Our education system needs work, and we know it. We're taught to take tests, not to understand the concepts of what we are taught. In a 2003 study by the UNICEF we ranked 18/24! But again, overhauling our education system isn't free. Even if funding isn't the cause of our problems now, it's going to take more money than we put into it now to fix it. I don't think that the privatization of education would accomplish anything, because there is just too much of a chance that more people would be excluded. "Private" automatically means that it would not be funded by the federal or state government which would mean that whoever funds the schools decides what is taught there and who gets in, and no amount of financial aid would change their standards. They tried to institute private schools here in California awhile back and it got voted down pretty fast.

So I am up to book five of the Vampire Earth series, haven't had time to start the fifth one though. I do highly recommend the series though, it is very well written.

Just finished Sea of Death, last book of the Blade of the Flame trilogy (Eberron novels, so more D&D shit). It got really silly in the end, I mean, I still liked it and all but the author needs to be hit on the head with a rolled up newspaper. And Fennicy, when you asked what the series was about did you mean Dragon Below or Icewind Dale trilogy? They are both D&D novel series, set in different worlds. I want to read the Heirs of Ash series (more Eberron), but I need to talk venomouslobster into lending the books to me.
