And it's funny because I keep hearing comments on Facebook from people either pissed off about it or simply charmed.
I guess I fall in the latter. I don't know why people are annoyed or whatever. So it's a white actress dancing around Akiba. Calm down. I can't believe it was directed by McG, though, the man who brought us Terminator Salvation. |

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but this is probably the first night in a while that I don't really have to be anywhere (well... we're going to the movies, at midnight, but not for a work or something).
This past weekend, had to cover a bunch of protests from the Westboro Baptist Church and a comic book convention. Some of the Westboro coverage: Story posted here: http://www.dailytitan.com/2010/02/westborobaptistprotest/ One of the department heads for the College of Communications wants to use my Westboro counter-protest photos in the next edition of her textbook. Pretty cool. I get to sign document licensing the usage in a couple days. Comic Expo coverage: Story for Comic Expo here: http://www.dailytitan.com/2010/02/longbeachcomicexpo/ It's just been a long week, though. I've spent the past three days trying to get this other guy on the phone and getting ready to cover this protest that's going to be all over California on March 4. So how is everyone else? Busy? |

Well, it's not necessarily a "Fuck you!" so much as a "WTF?!?!?!" but while walking around the mall on a night off, Brandon and I happened into a GameStop. I was interested in playing the Dante's Inferno or God of War 3 demos, if they had them (which they didn't), so I started playing the Katamari Damacy demo instead.
To my right, on the other side of the entrance, is a 4-foot-tall, VERY, VERY obese girl (around 10 years old and at LEAST 200 pounds) trying to play with the Wii and can't figure out how to work Super Mario Brothers. She's wearing a tiara and eating ice cream. Her dad (an overweight, but not obese guy) comes by and starts going on about how Nintendo sucks and how Xbox is better and she should be playing that. Anyway, he pulls his daughter along and he stands behind me, making indistinguishable comments. "... What is she playing?" then to me. "What are YOU playing?!" "Katamari Damacy," I say. "REPEAT that!" "Oh, it's uh Katamari Damacy," I say a bit loudly. "Dome-assy," he goes, as though he's heard of it and understands now. "What is that?!" "Oh, uh... it's kinda weird, I guess. You're trying to roll things up and collect them." "Like food?" "Yeah, there's some of that in there." "See, this kinda stuff is why I think kids should be out, playing in the park," he says rather snidely to me, as he pulls his daughter along and tells her Xbox is a better console anyway and they should be playing the demo station. ... The guy seemed to knock his daughter as being an idiot a couple times in the 10 minutes I was around them. ![]() (Last edited by Rogue on 02-27-10 08:59 PM) |

That sucks about your stolen hard-drive. Sorry to hear it.
Best of luck in Baghdad, True. You do our country proud. I've actually always wanted to go there, since it's the cradle of civilization and it was really advanced in its day and everything. |

It's March 4!
California is going to erupt in protests against the way public education is constantly getting hacked and slashed. I'm heading into L.A. with a busload of people from my university to cover their march from Pershing Square to the governor's L.A. office on Spring Street. They'll be joined by thousands from other schools and colleges in the area. This is going to get insane. Over 100 schools are going to have their own demonstrations or will join in regional ones. Also 17 other states will be joining in with their own protests. Today is going to be awesome. |

I realized your state not only has a mandate on teaching Intelligent Design in place of evolution, but that the Westboro Baptist Church are based right there as well. Why don't you guys have protests 'round the clock? ![]() The protest today was huge, a MASSIVE clusterfuck of people. Cool. (Last edited by Rogue on 03-08-10 04:36 AM) |

This is probably one of the rare times I'll say that the movie looks better than the book. Kick-Ass is only 8 issues in, with the script out a couple years ago when there was still only one issue published.
You can watch the red band trailers at http://iamkick-ass.com. Seriously, the book was all right, but nothing I'd consider a favorite. Even on paper, Hit Girl and Big Daddy were the more interesting characters. |

From the band that brought the world dancing on treadmills, in their backyard and covered in wallpaper, here's their Rube Goldberg device video which only hit the Web this week and already has several million hits.
Neil Gaiman wrote on his blog that he gets ridiculously happy every time he watches it, and I'm inclined to agree whole-heartedly. ![]() |

Just what you might think it means. "Gilligan's Island" is finally going to join the ranks of "Charlie's Angels," "Starsky & Hutch," "The Brady Bunch," "The A-Team," "Land of the Lost," "The Addam's Family," "Lost in Space," "Mission: Impossible," and "Wild Wild West" and so many other television shows that became movies with other actors playing the leads. Lest we forget, the castaways were saved in a TV movie in the '70s. ![]() |

Yeah, our spring break isn't for another couple of weeks. I still haven't really gotten a weekend yet due to having to cover events happening Thursday-Saturday and then write them up on Sunday in the office while also editing video.
So many papers due this week on top of that. ![]() ![]() This past week was interesting and yet so draining. Covered some guest poets doing a reading earlier this week (still need to write the story) and a Native American pow-wow yesterday (also still need to write the story ... both are due today ![]() (Last edited by Rogue on 08-31-11 09:36 PM) |

Well, trouble at home is often why people become workaholics, except in this case its the lack of home, I suppose.
I thank you for the sacrifices you're making for this country. I'm so sorry you have to be separated from those you care about and would go to for comfort and kind words. I can't imagine what it would be like to be in your situation and you have my deepest sympathy. At least when it's over, you can snuggle and be happy with your husband all the live long day AND have great credentials and work experience for a civilian job. ![]() |

Originally posted by Katana Thanks! I shot most of the footage in the video, and wrote the story that accompanied it. One of our multimedia people edited the video and wrote the script for me to say. This one has been my cleanest video in term of shots and sound. For some reason the sound is awful in my other reports. Spring break can't come soon enough. I might be covering another protest this weekend in L.A. This one would be against the war. |

Yeah the song itself isn't near as catchy as their stuff in the past, and it's not one of my favorites, but I'm really wondering how they were able to shoot a lot of that in one shot. It doesn't look like there was a track for the camera.

Originally posted by Elara It's funny you should word it that way, because I've come to dislike the work of Mark Millar (the guy who wrote Kick-Ass). Millar also wrote Wanted and Marvel's Civil War, and I felt REALLY dirty and disgusted after reading Wanted (which also has a movie, which is NOTHING like it). Millar is one of the highest grossing comic writers of the last decade, and his writing is just so childish at points. Like calling someone a "homo" is designed to be ironic and real. It seems like people just keep buying his stuff because they think his work is brooding and edgy. It's an Emperor's New Clothes situation. Wanted and Civil War HEAVILY take from Watchmen. In fact, the parts that mimic (or rip-off if you want to call it that) are the only parts with any real depth. Hmm... (Last edited by Rogue on 03-19-10 04:00 PM) |

Heh, it's weird that I feel so annoyed by the comic's writer, yet for some reason I'm interested in the movie. I guess because it went its own way, maybe it won't be like the book at all?

See, that's another interesting thing about it. It looks like it's geared toward the younger crowd, but it's a bloody, bloody book. I mean, Hit-Girl is supposed to be like 9 or 10 and she curses A LOT and kills people and, if I remember right, she's rather racist.
Kick-Ass, himself, is a teenage boy who pretty much just jerks off and reads comics and then buys a scuba suit and practices his iconic poses before he decides he's enough of a superhero. On his first attempt at stopping criminals (two guys tagging a wall, in the movie it's apparently two guys trying to steal a car or something), they ask what he's looking at, he answers, "A couple of homos," at which point they beat him, stab him and he stumbles into the street where he's hit by a Mercedes. While Millar seemed like he was trying to capture real life, it's pretty meh. For some reason I still feel like watching the movie. Weird. Maybe it's just for a chance to write a review. |
