Aww, thanks. So far it's been class, grocery shopping, and soon work... but at least Ben is bringing me dinner tonight so that is a plus. I've done a few pre-birthday things so it isn't so bad... and I get to go to a hockey game on Saturday as my big present so yay! |

I'm so sorry for you and your friends, especially his wife. I cannot imagine how hard this whole thing must have been for her. I suppose that you can at least take solace that he did not suffer when he went, that is better than a lot of people get. You make a good point though, it has been a pretty death-heavy year. So the hockey game I went to was awesome! The home team lost, but otherwise it was a really good game, and the premium seats are so cool... they have waitstaff! I've also learned that Staples Center has the best hot cocoa I've ever had, serious it was rich and creamy and super chocolaty... so good! |

So I just finished reading it yesterday (hey, I had a lot of classwork) and I have to say that I am quite pleased at how well the new author did with the work. There are subtle differences in writing style, but I don't really mind them because he has done a great job at capturing the essence of the characters and the world itself. Of course, I suppose it's easier to do that when you have your entire plot written out in advance.

But yeah, without going into "spoiler" territory, a lot of big things get resolved in this book. Not everyone is in it (Elayne and Galad don't appear at all, nor does Lan). And the thing that makes me happiest is that by the end Rand finally leaves what I have come to term "douchbag mode", or at least it looks like he will. But yeah, for those other WoT fans, let me know what you think of this latest installment. For those that have never read the series, what are your thoughts on having another author finish a series like this?

So, today at the end of lecture, one of my teachers informed us of something that literally disgusted me. Next fall, the California State University system will be laying off ALL of their part-time faculty. There are 22,000 teachers in the entire system, about 10,000 or more of them are part-time. That's right, they are getting ride of almost half of all the teachers in the system. The heads have been wanting to do this for awhile in order to "streamline" the California education system like a corporation, and they are using the budget crisis as their justification for it now.

This means that next semester, students in the CSU system will be paying a 20% fee increase, still dealing with furlough days, and over half the faculty will no longer be there. Oh, and almost all the majors on campus were already becoming impacted (really hard to get in to). So you have way more classes to take to get into the majors, and almost no classes available. Then the full time faculty needs to pick up the slack by teaching classes they haven't taught in 10-15 years, so they will be sub par classes as a result. Joy. The professor that was telling us about it works part time at both CSULB and CSULA and he was given the information by both schools. |

I also wonder at why they say nothing in the paper... however, I've noticed that the daily49er doesn't always jump on things. But from what the teacher himself had been told, all the part timers were being cut. I do not know his sources. It might just be in the history department, however he told us what he himself had been told. He didn't seem pissed, he honestly seemed more worried about us because of how much harder it was going to be for students to get classes.

Also, I've noticed this at Long Beach but I don't know about the other schools, but it seems that more often than not the part time teachers are the ones that don't have the PhD, or at least they don't care enough to stress it. They are increasing the furloughs that much? Dear gods, how the hell do they plan to have this work?

As for my holiday plans, I pretty much am done with them already. Went up to visit my grandma on Friday and came back yesterday. Other than that I'm going to the parent's house on Xmas Eve for tamales then bringing some to Ben at work... and I get to work on Xmas Day, joy!
