| Ok, so as many of you know, I am moving to Pennsylvania in less than a month.... in the middle of December... when it is all cold and snowy. So, being a native of Southern California, who can count the number of times she has been in snow on one hand, I need help.
First off, we are going to be driving there. Going I-40 until Texas when we cut up through Oklahoma on the Will Rogers Turnpike, into Missouri and up the 44 to St. Louis and the I-70. Through Illinois, Indiana and Ohio to the I-79 in Pennsylvania and up to Slippery Rock. I have no real idea of weather conditions on the road that time of year and so I look to the experience of you all for tips. Are all weather tires good enough for these major roads, or do we need chains? Clothing recommendations? How annoying is it to drive through St, Louis, Indianapolis, and Columbus? AAA trip books can only tell us so much. |

| Well, the tire debate is mainly this:
Ben's mom says that basically everyone out there just has all-weather tires and never use chains because they are so good about keeping the roads plowed. No one uses chains, and a few people use snow/winter tires. Right now Ben's car has regular old tires, which would require his buying chains. We plan on getting the all weather tires since he needs new tires anyway, and they will be fine for the roads out there. Problem is we don't know about the roads going out there... would they be okay, or should we get chains? They are major interstates, so in theory they should be fine... but I also don't know how bad the weather typically is this time of year back there. |

| I need to do some research on how the states we are going through are on plowing. I have a friend that moved here from Ohio and she said that Ohio is pretty much on par with Pennsylvania about keeping the roads clear. I would assume that the rest are the same, though I wish I knew more about the middle states we are going through (hey, Xeu, you ever been down near Joplin?). I am also worried about the winds, as I have never driven in a snow storm and don't know the differences between it and heavy rain storms.
I am now looking into the antifreeze for lower temperatures, since I want to get it changed out before we go... especially in my car which is being shipped and might sit for a few days. Any recommendations? |

| The estimate right now is that we will be out there by Christmas. We are driving a 2007 Dodge Calibur, which is a fairly light car. The car being shipped is a 2001 Mazda 626. Neither have any leaks that we have found... we are both pretty good at taking care of our vehicles, though I do plan on getting a new car as soon as I can afford one (the Mazda has other issues, trust me).
I got a bunch of numbers to check road conditions in the various states we are going through. If they work the same as the Cal-Trans line does out here it should be just fine. |

| I am sorry that you are going through such a rough time right now, but I do feel that I need to say something... don't you think you drink a bit too much? I see your posts on facebook, and coming from a family of alcoholics I have to say that it has me concerned. I just don't want you to try and drown away your problems to only create new ones.
I know you cannot do it right now, but you might want to explore moving somewhere else in order to get a fresh start. Not anywhere far, maybe just a bigger city or a different valley, where there are more job opportunities and nicer people. |

| Yeah, I still have it. We also have smart phones so if the passenger is awake we can look up things... probably going to need to once we get close since all of the maps we have do a rather crappy job of getting us from the 79 to Slippery Rock. I don't know if the 108 or the 422 would be better, or if it would be a good idea to cut through Moraine State Park on PA 588. I know that we can just call his mom and ask once we get close, but it would be nice to know before hand, ya know?
One thing I know I am going to need is some winter boots... any recommendations? I have looked at some online, but you can only get so much looking at words and a picture. I need to find someplace around here that sells them for a decent price, and sells more than those stupid Ugg boots. |

| We are gonna be in Slippery Rock, about an hour north of Pittsburgh, just south of the 80. Ben's mom said it was not too bad to deal with last year even though it was a pretty bad winter. I will look into those boots.

| I like dark beers, preferably craft or import. I love, LOVE trappist ales like Chimay! SO GOOD!
Locally, there is a mircrobrewery called Rockbottom Brewery, and it is amazing. It's a chain brewery, so they have locations everywhere and each location has its own brewer who makes their own beer. I had a little of the beer from the location in La Jolla (near San Diego) once, and I like the Long Beach location better. I really want to try the ones out in Pittsburgh and King of Prussia once we move to PA... the brewer here is apparently good friends with the brewer at the KoP location. |

| Speaking of family....
Fuck my asshole of a brother who can't take credit for his own fucking problems and needs to lash out at everyone else! The skinny: My nephew Albert just had a birthday/going away party on Saturday (he's in the navy and being restationed in Washington). He picked up his cousin Josh for the party and the plan was for him to crash the night there and be taken back in the morning. This was the established plan. Went to the party, it was great, then we went home while said nephew, his sister, cousins and best friend when out to a bar. His sister is only 19, and has a fake ID, and I don't care since I was drinking at that age myself and it's her life. Anyway, next morning they take Josh home and go to meet their dad, since Albert is leaving his car there. They were late... my brother is a punctual bastard, so he was pissy. So rather than say that they were late because they were out drinking all night, they lied... and said that they were late because they had to take Josh home, and that this was because I was supposed to take him home after the party and didn't. So my brother, being the guy he is, takes my nephew at his word... and then later goes to my parent's house and starts talking shit about me. My mother stood up for me, because she also knew the established plan as told to us by Josh, who had made the plans with Albert and his sister. But Albert would never lie to him, so my brother refuses to listen. Later that night, my mom called and told me about all this. Now, given that I am the favored aunt of this bunch (since there is 2-7 year age gap between us), I am noticeably pissed off and hurt. I understand the reason to lie, but I am not happy with them hanging me out to dry like that. So, I called them both out on Facebook, that way they couldn't try to hide behind anything or anyone. My niece, in turn, calls her dad and chews him out for talking shit and making me mad at them, hangs up on him, and is now not talking to him (this is an on-going trend). So, my brother calls me and starts yelling, saying that I shouldn't post shit about him on Facebook, and that I should have called him if I had an issue. Firstly... this is coming from the man that started talking shit about me to my mother rather than call ME and talk to ME since he had a problem. Secondly, the issue was between me and my niece and nephew, not him... that was a separate issue. He went on to say that if I ever posted anything about him on facebook again that I would no longer be his sister in his eyes. Then he called my mother and chewed her out too. And he wonders why his daughter doesn't want to talk to him... or why I want to move to another state. Fuck this shit, fuck him, and this stupid drama shit. Edit: Talked to my niece. She states that he knew all of the plans, including them staying out late, the day before and that the "me taking Josh home" idea was a suggestion that he had made and they had turned down. I still need to talk to Albert, but for the most part it seems that my brother is just being his normal dickish self. Oh, and he called my mom and apologized, citing stress at work (not a good excuse), and apparently saying he had already talked to me... I haven't heard a word since that last call.
