And you still get together to meet with your family to play board games? Wow. I can't remember the last time I did anything like that with my parents. Tell me about your family. |

Heh, my mom also volunteers at her church and she's off-and-on done stained glass projects as a hobby. |

I pretty much spent the morning reading about Josef Mengele. Nightmarish shit, man.
|
For some reason I also started compiling a short list of things I've done in my life. Historic things I've seen, visited, touched, and so on. I'm sure it's not much compared to true history buffs or people who are well-traveled, but I was quite pleased on past reflection.

Looking over a profile you'd written for yourself you listed as your theme songs "In The End" by Linkin Park, "In The Light" by DCTalk, and "Forever Today" by DJ Tiësto.
|
Why those songs?

After getting my first kiss when I was 13, with the guy trying to stick his hand up my shirt, despite having my period for over the next couple months, I came to my mom worried that I might be pregnant. Even called my grandmother to tell her that I was worried, and even asked an advice nurse at the hospital. It was pretty bad. |

Coulda sworn I saw him and another elder walk into Pep Boys in Bellflower yesterday, but I didn't want to just scream, "Vulkar!!" at some random person and hope it's him. I mean, the guy's on the complete opposite end of the state. |

Tell me about your college experiences. I think I remember you playing a zombie game with Nerf guns.

There's no real way of gauging how much I've seen since I go to a lot of museums, ghost towns, landmarks, and other points of historic interest all over. I know there's a lot I'm forgetting.

It wouldn't come off so to anyone else but one of the most horrifyingly embarrassing memories I have is when I was 11 and broke my cousin's son's foam bat playing with it while they were in town for my grandfather's funeral.
|
I apologized to my cousin, Carrie, who said it wasn't a big deal. But later, after the funeral, my cousin's husband, Lance, confronted me about it in front of my uncle's step kids and pretty much made me feel like shit. I was mortified and started sobbing about it and my uncle came in thinking I was crying about my grandfather. Anyway, I still don't talk to Lance. At least not comfortably. It was rather traumatizing.

I'd do it, if I were you! |
![]() The Turkish love entertaining visitors. When you go shopping there, they pull you into the shop and insist on serving you drinks like coffee, apple tea, or raki (a much stronger alcohol than the Greeks' ouzo). They call this their "Turkish hospitality." Sales people can be REALLY pushy, and it's hard to get away when you're sitting in a plush chair with your feet up, drink in hand, while they try to get you to buy a handwoven carpet that's the size of a coffee table for $5,000. Currently the American dollar is almost twice as strong as the Turkish lira, and supposedly they offer specials for bringing foreign currency into the country. Since they're a part of NATO they largely don't hate Americans. ![]() Seriously, though, of all the countries I've been to, Turkey's the only one that rolled out entertainers everywhere we went. They had traditional dancers during lunch, and this weird performance at Ephesus for the tourists. It was Cleopatra and Caesar watching some gladiatorial match while they played music from "Ben-Hur" and the theme for the Olympics. Rick Steves goes on about how he made a tradition 8 years in a row to end every trip to Europe in his twenties (fucking bragger ![]() I haven't been to Istanbul, but I'd love to go. EDIT: Forgot to mention it, but it's worth pointing out. Turkey's a mostly Muslim country. Seemed like everywhere we went you'd hear the call to prayers from a nearby mosque. It was kind of eerie sometimes because some mosques' call to prayers sound like an air raid siren and you'll hear different mosques at the same time. You'd hear this voice, encouraging you to come pray with them: Most people in Turkey aren't strict practitioners of Islam. Women don't get called out in the street for not having their heads covered or what have you. It's sort of like here where some people only go to church for Easter and Christmas. Anyone else weirded out when people pronounce "Gangnam Style" like how an American would read it? Like "Gang-nam," not "Gong-num." |
