Currently installing a host of mods for Morrowind, because it works on my computer again!

Woo!

Also, Skyrim and Forza 4 on the 360, occasional Skyward Sword on the Wii, Dynasty Warriors 7/XL on the PS3, Yu-Gi-Oh 2011 (shut up), Pokemon White, and Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS...

It is a good month.

Linked for hugeness

Yes, after all these years, now you know what I look like.

It's not a very good picture and it'll be a pain in the ass to get anything more than my head, but what do you expect from an MP3 player's camera?

sure, I see that after I'm 75% of the way through doing most of that manually.

I'll stick with the manual anyway.

I'd be happier about The Old Republic if I had a computer that could run it.

But, I just started saving toward a new laptop for other reasons (I'd been wanting one, but I had been stupid about saving up.)

Problem eventually solved!

I can run those surprisingly well now, actually, although I am still using a 2.66GHz Celery...

Problem is, I have a tiny hard drive at only 40GB, and my external died. If the patch is 9GB+, there's no way I can clear enough space to fit the game on here.

So, guess I'll need to dip into my New Computer fund for a hard drive.

Well, I finished the main quest.

You know, for killing SPOILER in the middle of SPOILER, it still seemed...

Underwhelming.

It's still infinitely better than Oblivion, which is an extended case of "Do this. Oh. You failed. Do this. Oh. You can't. Follow someone else who can," and is better as an action game and an RPG than Oblivion. To say nothing of the superior worldbuilding; there's a believable conflict among mortals, not a simple case of Evil Empire vs. Good Kingdom (something sorely lacking among RPGs), and the ancient Nord barrows and Dwemer ruins are well-designed, not Oblivion's generic crap.

Incidentally, dwemer ruins are back! Yay!

However...

The action still falls rather flat. It's still a matter of numbers for any of the big fights; the only chances you really get to use your wits are against normal enemies in ruins where you can exploit the traps. Dragons? Chug the right Resist potion, apply an Aversion to [element] and fire off some dual-cast destruction spells. Or, if you're a fighter, Resist pot, Weakness to Poison poison, health damage poison. Throw in the occasional Shout for flavor/Breath interruption/desperate attempt to not die because of an ill-timed ambush.

Skyrim is decent as an action-RPG, with stronger worldbuilding than many, but no meaningful variation in the action. There are some memorable quests, and indeed the final one could have been...

Except for one problem.

Spoiler:
Alduin was pathetic. Especially given the three allies you were forced to have... At least the first time he put up a decent struggle. Hell, the guy you had to fight to get into the Hall of Heroes gave me more trouble.

Ultimately, it's better than Oblivion, and I'll certainly play it again. But Morrowind is still a better RPG, and that's kind of the point. Skyrim's a good game, just... not quite what I was hoping for.

Now! To be positive.

The faction questlines seem drastically shorter, at least the College of Winterhold, but much, much better. It's not easy to make a good Mage's Guild questline, but they really pulled it off here. I made a new character just to go through that one after my Dark Brotherhood character joined for spell vendors.

Ultimately, Skyrim's greatest failing is at the same things New Vegas did right.

The civil war wasn't fleshed out enough, and the extent of it seemed to be "both sides are dicks".

The end sequence just didn't feel climactic enough. A trek through the mist, beating up a ghost, and then yet another dragon fight, except infinitely easier.

Even the first time you fight the final boss, it feels no different from any other fight with any other dragon.

And as you've noted, almost every quest comes down to retrieving an item, beating the hell out of someone, or beating the hell out of someone so you can retrieve an item. Diplomatic solutions are almost nonexistent.

And this would be forgivable if the action were better.

But even the dragon fights wore thin after a short time, because they were all the same. The first few were awesome, until that realization set in.

And stealth tends to be... unreliable. Chug invisibility potion, go into Stealth mode wearing no armor, still get seen by Thalmor. What.

Oh and in one dragon fight, I was attacked and killed by guards because I tried to interrupt a breath attack with a shout. I was not happy about that.

That's the idea. Blame him for any shitty thing that gets passed, and if he blocks all of them, blame him for nothing being done.

I will gig him on his stupid reason for not wearing an American flag on his lapel though. It's just not presidential and saying he wears it in his hear. Bull fucking shit you just don't want to wear another fucking pin on your lapel because you think it's tacky. (Joking)!

If no candidates had worn them, no one would notice. If all but one wear them, people notice. It's a cheap attempt at faux-patriotism and trying to trap your opponents, nothing more.

Fuck this cold. I've had it for a week and I keep waking up having trouble breathing from the congestion.

Fuck.

I'm pretty sure it's not pneumonia, though, since I don't have a fever, and I'm missing most flu symptoms - notably, even the muscle aches and headaches (which I normally have almost constantly anyway) are absent.

So the good news is this should be going away sometime soonish.

The bad news is that it's not going to get me out of work, despite the fact that I've woken up gasping for air once (the most severe day of this, Friday. Couple hours later I walked two miles to work anyway.) Might talk to my boss tomorrow to get out of Wednesday anyway, this is getting to be a bit absurd...

Like, I'm not for taxing the rich more. I'm just not. And this is coming from a dirt poor democrat. I think we have a strong majority of people in this country who think corruption and wealth are one in the same....there's good and bad EVERYwhere. The people who held me up at gunpoint at GameStop, for example, are most likely just as poor as I am, and if not, the discrepancy isn't much. But I do NOT think that money earned should be taken from ANYone, just for the sake of taking it.

You honestly think it's about punishing them?

Disappointing.

For the government to actually do things, money is needed. The rich can much more readily afford it than the poor. $2,000 out of the income of someone who makes 20,000 a year is a lot of money, money that may be needed for medical bills, home emergencies, car maintenance, kids' college fund, whatever. $200,000 out of the income of someone who makes $2,000,000 a year? Proportionally the same, but the millionaire is still left with $1,800,000 - you can't honestly say he's suffering. Despite this, many of the richest people in the country pay proportionally lower taxes than their own secretaries - this has been documented and even admitted by some of the people in question.

An argument could be made for this being due to asinine loopholes, but closing those loopholes would be raising their taxes indirectly anyway, if perhaps only to what the "advertised" tax rate is, and either way the result is the same - people throwing ridiculous amounts of money at politicians to try to preserve their tax breaks because throwing a couple hundred thousand dollars away in bribes is still cheaper.

To put the proportional taxing argument into perspective here, let's bump our numbers to 20%. To raise twenty billion dollars off people who make 20k/yr at this rate, it would take five million people. Or you could just tax Warren Buffett and you've got that covered. And he's certainly left with more than enough money to live comfortably.

The other options? Cut everything (except the military, because this is America and we can never do that! ), or take even more taxes from those who are actually struggling now.

It's just math.

I'm not disagreeing about the problem of outsourcing, but your argument against taxes is based on a false premise.

Ultimately though, I think there's quite a bit that needs to be done that does need someone to pay higher taxes - and as I said in the other topic, the rich can far more easily afford it.

Well, raising taxes or reducing our overinflated "defense" budget. I'm just proposing the more likely solution. I'll elaborate on the overinflated nature of that in comment tags (view the HTML or quote my post in a reply to see it)

The biggest one being that our schools fucking suck. I know, I should ease up on the flowery rhetoric. I know not everyone's as quick to learn as me, but it took until high school for my teachers to catch up with the math I was doing in my spare time when I was six. My second-grade teacher (first of four) said she was unable to teach me anything. For the US to be competitive, our people need to be properly educated, and that's just not happening in a lot of places.

We should also get back to actually making shit instead of outsourcing our manufacturing and having an abundance of service jobs here. Nothing wrong with service jobs, but they can't support an economy alone. That, however, is less a matter of needing more taxes and perhaps more a matter of needing more regulation, as you said in the other topic.

And people need to quit acting like manual labor is a horrible thing that must be avoided at all costs. It's an important part of the economy - someone has to build the shit. That's more a matter of attitudes than anything else though.

Also, in response to your last point, I don't trust any system that lets people choose where their taxes go because that makes it far too difficult to plan around for budgeting. Transparency is fine, let them know, just don't let them decide.

All your numbers are wildly inaccurate. Except possibly the one about poverty.

If I'm going to be nice and work with your 10 billion number, there's individual people with far more than that. In fact, with our 2010 population estimate of over 300 million people, each one would have to pay a total of about 30 dollars a year. I pay more than that, and I work part time, about 20 hours a week, at only a little over minimum wage.

If I"m going to be less charitable, our military budget alone was over 600 billion dollars in 2010.

EDIT: Oh, wait, I did my math wrong. Just makes my point stronger, though.
