Unless you have a modded PSX, Japan only for Gradius Gaiden, personally I run it via emulator for now, it's an awesome title, best 44 bucks I ever spent, it's just too bad I lost a bid for Salamander Deluxe Pack (game eventually sold for 79 bucks).

It basically takes all of the old Gradius formulas (Moai heads, volcano stages, boss rush) and puts new spins on them, for instance the Volcano stage gets eaten by a black hole as you try to stay ahead of the unseen black hole (your missiles even get swallowed up), defeating the boss for the stage destroys the black hole, and from there the Boss Rush begins, complete with Gradius 1 boss music, and the dreaded appearing zub ships.

As for the Gradius 3 vid Picto linked to, I have it saved on my PC, BGR-44 is an awesome player, but tviks of shmups.com could very easily go toe to toe with this guy.

Well I managed to snag a PSP and the Gradius Collection for it, but those memory sticks are hella expensive, and 1 GB cards are all they sell now, and they are 60 bucks. It looks like I'll be playing the Gradius games like the old days, when one couldn't save and had to either credit feed or try to 1 CC the games.

Pac Man, I cut my videogaming teeth with the old Atari 2600 Pac Man way back in the day (that day being 1983 or so), only to truly find a superior arcade version around town. To this day I still fire up Pac Man quite a bit, and while my all time personal best is around 300,000 (must play the speed up hack version, the game is too slow otherwise), Ms. Pac Man around 250,000, Tetris is ok in my book, but I come from a different era of gaming.

Virtua Fighter 5 and MGS 4 look like winners to me, the system needs some good compilation titles though to jump start it. I'll see what I get back for income tax next year, then I'll do a little research on the backward compatibility of the system, if it can play import PSX and PS 2 titles, I'm there baby!

I love my Sony systems, including the little PSP that could.

Playstation One to me is still pretty iffy for classic gaming (same with Saturn), a few more years under it's belt, it will be , same with the Dreamcast, PS 2, and X-Box, though that's still long enough down the road not to be classic yet.

SUCKS...

It is overrated to the point of ridiculousness... It's so freaking generic... The final bosses always always suck, and it's lame, in general.

I'd take any Doujin Shooter over it, any day of the week.

You sir, have declared war, prepare for battle. Everything you've pointed out about Gradius, sounds like you've never played a game in the series. Gradius easy? That right there tells me you've never played the arcade versions (if any versions), Gradius 3 arcade is a beast, try finishing that one in one sitting sometime. Another one for you to try is Nemesis 90 Kai for the X68000 (yes it's easy to emulate), try beating that one and call it easy, you won't. The only truly easy one to beat is Salamander 2, due to being able to continue from where you died, but once you get to loop 2 all bets are off as continues go out the window. And how is Gradius overrated anyway, it's a niche market, the shmup fandom is, and generic? Give me a break. Hate to rant but as a fan of the series, I felt I had to defend Gradius, my two cents is all.

In other news, why Konami did this, I don't know I doubt they are in any financial troubles. If it were PS3 games only I'd understand as that system hasn't hit a wide enough range of people yet to risk putting out too many titles for it, but when games for the Wii were cancelled as well, that raised a red flag for me. Could Konami be in financial troubles?

The SNES Gradius 3 was toned down a lot, mainly to remove the 3-D stage, and to balance out the difficulty (also have to mention the Cube Rush, there's no pattern to that, basically you have to build a safe spot to hide, or do like one Gradius expert named tviks did, manage to go max speed, and still have every damned cube miss you). Stage 9 itself is a beat to get past in the arcade version, what with those damned lasers you have to slide between, along with tons of enemies shooting to take you down.

The SNES Arcade difficulty in Gradius 3 is a joke compared to the actual arcade version of Gradius 3, it's like night and day (remembers back in the day he too once beat Gradius 3 in one credit, but on normal mode, plus I believe I was around 17 when I did it, 1992 I believe.)

And later loops in the arcade Gradius titles jack up the difficulty, with more eneimes, more bullets, and when you destroy a boss, they let out suicide bullets, Gradius V is notorious for sending monstrous waves of suicide bullets after bosses die in later loops.

Gaiden is so amazing I've: a) burned the ISO, b) bought the original game itself, original print, and c) bought Gradius Collection on PSP, for a whopping 3 versions of Gradius Gaiden, even if the burn is a PSX copy, and the real thing is also a PSX version.

Wanna know an overrated shmup or two, Ikuraga, and Radiant Silvergun, RS I've had the chance to play, wasn't my cup of tea, and Ikuraga is probably the most mentioned amongst casual shmup players.

And you call bullet patterns in a doujin something, try DonPachi, and DoDonPachi, hell anything by Cave, and you'll see where these doujins draw their inspiration from.

As for Parodius, absolutely love it, not only for it's gameplay, but it's wacky humor, and poking fun at not only Gradius, but other Konami titles as well, not to mention pop culture.

Bullet patterns mean nothing to me, challenge, and replay value keep me playing, something Gradius, Salamander, Parodius and , and the bullet hell of Cave games give me. I don't play a shmup for the bullet patterns, I play for the fun and in the case of Gradius for scores, and DonPachi/DoDonPachi for how big of a scoring chain I can manage to pull off. And if Gradius is reflex based, you can't tell me the bullet hell shmups aren't reflexed based (not to mention the ships smaller hitboxes) so basically both are reflexes, R-Type on the other hand is memory based.

Great rename to this thread, fitting now for sure.

The Donpachi/DoDonPachi games were for arcade and home systems (Donpachi and Dodonpachi are on PSX and Saturn in Japan, DDP DOJ is on PS 2 in Japan, there's also DDP Campaign version, and DDP DOJ Black Label, but these last two only one copy exists in each, given away to score competition winners, only 1 winner for each game), DDP 2 Beestorm was recently added to MAME, but it still doesn't work properly. This pretty much started the ball rolling for Cave, the company composed of former Toaplan employees, themselves a former branch of Taito (Toaplan was involved in making some excellent vertical shmups back in the day such as Twin Cobra, Twin Hawk/ Daisenpuu, Fire Shark, Flying Shark, and horis such as Hellfire S and Zero Wing, yes that Zero Wing), a couple members went on to form Gazelle, and as far as I can tell they made only one shmup, Air Gallet, an excellent manic type shmup in the vein of the old school Twin Cobra type games, only much faster paced that Toaplan's old offerings. Other Cave offerings available in Japan include, Mushimehama (or how ever it's spelled), Ibara, Ibara Pink Sweets, Guwange, and Dangun Feveron (quirky disco themed shmup, surprisingly weird, but surprisingly good).

R-Type Final has a few endings, basically none are really a happy ending, all involve small things usually on bosses, knock them off before you kill the bosses and next playthrough the stages will be different. Another boss has two little nodes on him that are hard to see, hit one to go to one last stage for one ending, the other for the other stage and ending.

Also good ploy to get me posting more, this thread definitely got my attention (it's a joke son, I say it's a joke).

It didn't feel like a necessary stage in the arcade version, it felt out of place, it stuck out like a sore thumb. Konami probably felt this way and axed it.

As a PSP owner I could get this, but unless I get the RPG bug again, it'll be just another version of two games done to death.

You gotta finish what you start man.

Go for those higher loops, after awhile the amount of suicide bullets from dead enemies will overwhelm you.

Indeed the green goo stage is a tough one, I hate it mainly for one reason, so claustrophobic (and I'm actually not), once had a bug i that stage where you shoot the little round hub and the gap in one spot reopens for you to continue on. Needless to say I shot the hub, but lo and behold the walls didn't move again costing me a precious life.

I'm also a fan of mostly 2-D anything, including shmups, hence why I started working on Toaplan Genesis games, they are amsuingly hard, quite fun, and will have you swearing a lot.

Also in Japan on the 25th (tomorrow) the PSP will finally see the release of Salamander, Parodius, and Twinbee Portables, will these make it to the U.S. or UK, we'll have to wait and see.

I've learned how to use the D-Pad on the PSP effectively for Gradius Collection enough to get far enough in and do better on Gradius 2 than any other incarnation.

Thank goodness to the forefathers of shmups Gradius, R-Type, and for verts, Xevious.

This is absolutely ridiculous, the only really rare title in this guys collection is Bubble Bobble 2 valued complete around 100 bucks, if he had the Famicom Recca game, then the price would shoot up, but he doesn't.

The bids are likely multi-accounts he has, because I doubt anyone would be that crazy enough to pay over $20,000 for just 670 NES titles, most I would pay would be around a thousand dollars.

Yeah I've read that article when it was posted at Shmups boards, they too agree with the guy. Shmups are really good for building reflexes and hand/eye coordination, probably more than any other genre.

Rhythm games like? Dance Dance Revolution?

Those are exercise games aimed to get those chunky kids off the couch and out to burn the fat.

Also good to get people laughing at you (I won't step foot on one of those, I'd rather play an intense game of Galaga).

Video Pinball and Atari Bowling on the old dino Atari 2600, fond memories of flipping the score in Video Pinball 12 times in a row, boredom from flipping the score eventually got me to stop playing it. Tried playing it through emulation recently, but a lot of rust had built upon my skills for that game.
