My question is this: Does anyone know any American sites that accept payment from and will ship to England? I know postage of such things will be expensive, but I'm sure there'd still be a huge saving in comparison.

Posted on 11-07-08 02:45 PM, in Redhat and AMD migrate VMs across CPUs Link
This is some amazing shit, Redhat and AMD have managed to transfer a Virtualized server across CPU platforms. Full Article follows

AMD AND REDHAT have just done the so called impossible, and demonstrated VM live migration across CPU architectures. Not only that, they have demonstrated it across CPU vendors, potentially commoditising server processors. Eeek!

The concept is simple, click a button, and your VM moves from one machine to the next. The execution for similar architectures has been done for ages, AMD can do it from E-Step Opterons to a promise of Magny Cours. Intel is a little more restrictive, but they can do it between iCore iNumber iNumberals as iwell.

The trick up till now has been to do the same thing between servers from different CPU vendors, it is the holy grail of virtualisation. Please note, there are about 37 holy grails of virtualisation at the moment, so this does not signal the end of days, just that the holy grail clock in Times Square dropped to 36.

If you look at the video here, you will see that they did it. Live migration while streaming HD video isn't all that bad a trick mind you, but doing it between a Barcelona, Shanghai and Intel box is. 36 more of these, and we will be in great shape.

How did they do it? No one is talking exactly, but since it has Redhat involvement, you can be pretty sure that they are using KVM, their in house hypervisor. Since this is an early tech demo, it is likely using parts pilfered from a bunch of open technology sources, but isn't that what open source is about? Good of the whole, not the few?

In any case, don't look for this to be a product at the local megamart any time soon, it is early. That said, the gauntlet has been thrown down, and we expect everyone with a decent hypervisor to be showing this off soon, and products with it baked in are sure to follow in 2009. Welcome to intertube speed progress

*Spartan walks into thread sighs at the Vista noobs who disable the features that actually make vista useful all in the attempts to make it less "bloated" [/pentupragefromstupidcustomers]

Now that I've got that out.

What exactly did you "debug" I'm kind of curious as to what features of vista you disabled.

I didn't disable anything myself. It just installed that way. The installer was cut down from DVD size to CD size, a bunch of registry tweaks are applied on install, some other stuff disabled... It all worked absolutely fine for me.

It was still shit for games though considering my now pretty low end PC.

That scares me

God, it's been ages since I've posted here. What have I been up to. Uh, I work in Telecom now i've moved out of sales. At this point I've sold everything from Fuses to Quarter of a Million dollar home theater systems to millionaires in wine country.

Spent a chunk of time unemployed and miserable doing freelance IT work to pay the bills.

I've been on and off in the poly scene and I've been seeing the same girl for three years and some change it has it's ups and downs and I still crush on someone pretty hard but that's life!

I think some things have changed since the last time I saw all of you.
My hair changes colors monthly. I don't have a problem.

I'm also a Mandalorian Merc now, currently an officer within Teren Clan for Northern California.

You should bring back everyone to the board!

I just bugged FX about the board a few moments ago actually. Most of us from the old Petaluma gang drifted and went our separate ways as folks are want to do. I'll ping some of the other folks though. Made the mistake of reading through my old posts, dear god there is some cringey shit.

E: FX needs his password reset
