Posted on 11-19-06 10:22 PM, in Re-institute the draft? Link
This guy's been going on about the draft for some time now and he keeps bringing it up in Congress. All of his attempts went down in flames, but still it makes one wonder, would required military service be good for the country?

According to Rangel (the Congressman trying to bring the draft back), instituting the draft would discourage people from pushing for wars.

Here's the recent article: The article

Congressman Rangel Will Seek to Reinstate Draft

WASHINGTON (Nov. 19) - Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 under a bill the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee says he will introduce next year.

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars.

"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.

Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, has said the all-volunteer military disproportionately puts the burden of war on minorities and lower-income families.

Rangel said he will propose a measure early next year. While he said he is serious about the proposal, there is little evident support among the public or lawmakers for it.

In 2003, Rangel proposed a measure covering people age 18 to 26. It was defeated 402-2 the following year. This year, he offered a plan to mandate military service for men and women between age 18 and 42; it went nowhere in the Republican-led Congress.

Democrats will control the House and Senate come January because of their victories in the Nov. 7 election.

At a time when some lawmakers are urging the military to send more troops to Iraq, "I don't see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft," said Rangel, who also proposed a draft in January 2003, before the U.S. invasion of Iraq. "I think to do so is hypocritical."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican who is a colonel in the U.S. Air Force Standby Reserve, said he agreed that the U.S. does not have enough people in the military.

"I think we can do this with an all-voluntary service, all-voluntary Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy. And if we can't, then we'll look for some other option," said Graham, who is assigned as a reserve judge to the Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals.

Rangel, the next chairman of the House tax-writing committee, said he worried the military was being strained by its overseas commitments.

"If we're going to challenge Iran and challenge North Korea and then, as some people have asked, to send more troops to Iraq, we can't do that without a draft," Rangel said.

He said having a draft would not necessarily mean everyone called to duty would have to serve. Instead, "young people (would) commit themselves to a couple of years in service to this great republic, whether it's our seaports, our airports, in schools, in hospitals," with a promise of educational benefits at the end of service.

Graham said he believes the all-voluntary military "represents the country pretty well in terms of ethnic makeup, economic background."

Repeated polls have shown that about seven in 10 Americans oppose reinstatement of the draft and officials say they do not expect to restart conscription.

Outgoing Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told Congress in June 2005 that "there isn't a chance in the world that the draft will be brought back."

Yet the prospect of the long global fight against terrorism and the continuing U.S. commitment to stabilizing Iraq have kept the idea in the public's mind.

The military drafted conscripts during the Civil War, both world wars and between 1948 and 1973. An agency independent of the Defense Department, the Selective Service System, keeps an updated registry of men age 18-25 - now about 16 million - from which to supply untrained draftees that would supplement the professional all-volunteer armed forces.

Rangel and Graham appeared on "Face the Nation" on CBS.

Considering the age range he's pushing for it's highly unlikely this will go through, but also taking into consideration how many new Congresspeople were elected to those seats recently, we still haven't seen how they're going to vote.

Either way, what's your stance on the draft?

My question is why he got zapped in the first place. Not shown on the vid, and is it was there on the audio I can’t tell.

From what's been gathered, the student police were conducting a random check of IDs in the computer lab. Our man in the video happened to not have his.

The police ask him to leave and upon walking him out, one of the officers supposedly grabbed the guy's arm. The guy then started shouting at the cop to not touch him, nothing gives him that right and so on.

Now, I'm not sure in which order the rest happened be it that the guy suddenly went limp or that the cops grabbed him to make him leave, but a struggle ensued and someone pulled out their Tazer and went to work. And the rest is up for dispute.

Just got back from seeing them in their Beyond Hell tour at the House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard (well technically I was back a few hours ago, but I'm still going to say it that way. ) Yeah, a whole post about this, but if you guys keep going on about the concerts you go to, then so am I.

Man, that was one hell of a show. They really know how to manipulate the spectacle that's ever been lost on the newer bands of today (hell even Metallica had Cunning Stunts... or Stunning Cunts depending on how you like to talk about it ).

I know a few of you guys aren't into Gwar and think they're crude and disgusting, but you know what? You're absolutely right (the lead singer wears a 2-foot long alien penis that hangs out of his thong). But they rock it hardcore.

Between songs people randomly ran on stage, wearing all sorts of prosthetics and either got killed off or did something just over the top gross. Either way, lots and lots of fake blood and other things were shooting out into the pit. Watching (S)Hitler ejaculate green sludge into the audience was definitely something I won't forget.

One of the people who ran out was dressed as Bush. As the running gag with Gwar goes, they're in Antarctica and happen to be near the gates of Hell. So when the lead singer asked the Bush impersonator what he was doing in Hell, the impersonator gleefully answered, "I've just been assassinated!" The audience erupted in cheers and applause and laughter so loud, the next few lines in the dialog, blasting through the massive PA system, weren't heard. The lead singer of Gwar then pulled out his broadsword and knocked the top of mask off revealing a pile of feces (novelty, plastic crap in a curled little pile, of course) that was spraying blood everywhere.

So yeah, talk about surreal experiences. My ears are still ringing.

Incidentally the bands that opened for them were Municipal Waste and The Red Chord. During Municipal Waste's set, they demanded that they pit play their "Wall of Death" in which the two halves of the pit run at each other fists drawn. Needless to say about 60 people all got punched in the face at the same time.

Here's some old video of Gwar doing a television spot. They've since added more grotesque and risque things to their costumes, and have upped their showmanship:

Old concert footage. Not the best, but it gives you an idea:

Well it's a good excuse to post the sequel. Guest starring Margaret Cho.

Interestingly this captures much of the scene life I've been exposed to for the past year. It has the Snow White burlesque dancer from the show Zabuza and I went to (Pictures here but NOT SAFE FOR PARENTS/WORK!) and the roller Derby Dolls scene has become rather big again in L.A. Watched the Tough Cookies (relatively hot girls in girl scout uniforms) take on the Sirens. All of them were some hot chicks kicking ass.

My wallet *pulls it out and rips that mother' apart* (I have one of those wallets that has a collapsed pocket on it and I carry A LOT of old things around with me) :
- The usual cards: State ID, social security card, college ID, bank card, library card, movie rental card (from no-name rental place--MovieTime), college library print card.
- Membership cards: L.A. County Natural History Museum, Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific (expired), Museum of Contemporary Art media pass.
- 3 keycards for various hotels (DoubleTree in Sacramento for a journalism convention, Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas for Rocky Con '05, Marriott for Anime Expo '03).
- 2 old health insurance cards (both are no good).
- 2 old Valentines from friends (one hand-made, one store-bought)
- 1 phone card that I bought in Paris.
- 6 "I Voted" stickers, overlapping each other on one of the inside pockets.
- 2 receipts (I recently cleaned out my wallet a little and pulled out all of the receipts I had tucked in the fold where the money's supposed to go in, after doing that my wallet was suddenly able to close again).
- 17 movie ticket stubs (Most of these were cleaned out recently, but I had found a vein of them hidden in one crevice).
- 5 museum admission stickers stuck on the inside of collapsed pocket (3 MOCA, 2 Exploratorium in San Francisco, 1 Japanese American Museum).
- 2 phone numbers from friends.
- 6 museum/attraction ticket stubs (L.A. Zoo, 2 LACMA, 2 LB Aquarium, and Orange County Fair)
- 5 concert ticket stubs (Poxy Boggards/Fenians, Poxy Boggards, Gwar, Flogging Molly, Fear Factory/Strapping Young Lad)
- 21 business cards from various people and businesses.
- 14 wrist bands from various venues for concerts, shows, and festivals (includes Mallrats Reunion, Hedwig at the Roxy, Labyrinth Masquerade, and gay Pride, 8 of them are from House of Blues).
- 12 special event tickets (2 Renaissance faires, 4 Rocky Horror tickets from other casts, 2 movie premieres, sneak preview for Steamboy, Rainbow Carnage, LACMA late night bash, Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation).
- 2 old Metro day passes (one from San Diego during Comic-Con).
- 2 magnets (Zabuza's business card and Rainbow Carnage's show dates)
- 4 raffle tickets (Might have been tickets to movies at the Art Theater)
- 1 sheet of coupons for Knott's Berry Farms' Halloween Haunt... that's getting thrown away.
- 1 Jones Soda label (Green Apple )
- $4

I'll have to post the contents of my bag later. In the meantime... that's my wallet.

Yep.

It just barely closes.

Depends on your definition of huge. My bag is about a foot wide, 8 or so inches high, and is covered with pockets and compartments (among other things). I go for function before form.

If necessary, I could easily fit a handgun in there. Hell, I accidentally walked into Disneyland with a couple knives that I had forgotten to take out that were resting on the bottom of the bag. The security people didn't look that deep and I didn't even realize they were there until I was going through my bag, looking for something.

Sorry, I had hit New Reply after your "Are purses strangely huge..." post and it either delayed or I just took too long with it.

Probably the latter.

It's interesting how things can get lost in translation, even with the same langauge. It's all good, though.

He probably addressed this in staff, but let's all wildly speculate anyway!

I think... he went to that party everyone was warning him about.

Any other guesses?

He was under Dergoex for a little while, but even that's gone inactive, but... back to the crazy theories!

He transformed into a giant squid and decided to write his account of the Franco-Prussian War in munchkin blood, but after taking out the Lollipop Gang he suddenly realized he could no longer write due to his lack of opposable thumbs. So now he's fulfilling his life's dream of doing stints in hentai, raping big-eyed anime girls with his massive, throbbing tentacles.

He, like in that movie "The Santa Clause," accidentally killed the tooth fairy and now he's flitting around the world collecting children's (and some old people's) teeth to make into hemp jewelry that he sells to hippies and aging scenesters.

I think it's a shame that these cops are in some sense being excused because our society believes cops are bad already.

Where the hell did this come from? A few bad cops here and there who made a few bad judgments. So does that make the whole lot bad? Of course not.

So by saying, "Well, everyone thinks cops are bad anyway, so what these guys did doesn't matter." Yes, it does. Because someone thinks you're a monster, doesn't mean you should prove them right.

I'm tired of these lowered expectations that we have for our leaders and people of authority. I'm not speaking ill of police, hell I know many of them who take every measure they can to still be civilized in the face of adversity and with difficult people by building rapports with them and taking care of tough situations with a cool head about them. These people are heroes.

Granted this student made a VERY stupid decision by making a scene and screaming his head off, but to dismiss the Tazer'ing because it's so-called typical behavior is scary. It's these forms of apathy that truly frighten me. Reminds me of this girl railing about being raped on another forum and warning people to take precautions and people responded back with posts like, "Well at least you got sex out of it" and "Haha. Buttsecks" (though it turned out the initial post wasn't completely honest, the reactions were still sickening).

I honestly don't see either side in the right here and if we just continue this idea that this world is all about hate, racism, and police brutality, then we're all losing.

EDIT: And just to add an even sicker note to this... someone just posted this on LiveJournal a couple moments ago:

My last post was more of a general statement which was also meant to include the public's opinion of cops and much of the media's portrayal of them. My fault.

In the end I was pretty much agreeing with you in a round about sort of way.

It was my original wording that probably threw you and I'm sorry for that.

While I hate that a lot of things are blamed on the media, the whole emphasis on the student's race came from many news outlets. There might be something to it in that one might ask why they decided to randomly check him and not someone else. But we don't know that they didn't check any whites, blacks, what have you, so the point is moot.

This was pretty much all there was: http://viscus.livejournal.com/160845.html?view=310349#t310349

I have no opinion of Thanksgiving. It's an excuse people make to have an extravagant dinner and be together, be that a good thing or bad.

The Pilgrims were a cult. But whatever... mashed potatoes!

Spent my Thanksgiving with my boyfriend and his brother and father at the movies.

It's an American tradition based on the supposed founding of a colony in Massachusetts in which a cult-like group of separating evangelists had their next year's harvest dinner after getting a lot of help from the Indians (Or Native Americans, whichever PC term you prefer). Of course, the very next year they'd put up a wall around their village and all outsiders were prohibited in this little Waco.

As tradition dictates we're supposed to be grateful for this founding (despite it not being of any grave importance than making way for the Puritans of the Bay Colony) among all of the other things in our lives and celebrate with a massive turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and other foods that they couldn't possibly have eaten at the first Thanksgiving because they weren't consumed or created yet.

So pretty much, we all just use it as an excuse to guilt trip each other into being more thankful for the things we should, eat an ungodly amount of gravy, and spend time with people whom we probably can't stand. Oh and kindergarteners get to wear paper buckle hats. It's adorable.

And that's what Thanksgiving means to me.

Saw this yesterday in place of Thanksgiving.

I liked it a lot, but there were parts that could have been better. It's hard to put a finger on it, but it just seemed like it needed more here and there.

While I'm not one that likes to tag buddy pics "gay," it feels like they really poured that on in this one on purpose. It was really sweet though how they made their friendship seem.

I'm amazed they didn't find some reason to throw in "Fuck Her Gently," but really where could they have fit it.

And yes, cock push-ups make an appearance. Hahaha.

Seriously, (and I never thought I'd say this) chill.

So people don't get sentimental. Big deal. If you find happiness in holidays that others don't then more power to you, but to "be ashamed" of others for not getting excited about Thanksgiving? Come on now.

Anyway, everyday should be a celebration of love, thankfulness and family. You shouldn't have to have a holiday to make you feel obligated to be grateful for what you have.

He's was trapped in Best Buy after waiting in line for the Wii so long that he built a fort out of Blue-Ray DVD players and they caved in on him. Could be weeks 'til someone finds him, unless Blue-Ray picks up and the prices drop.

Often times with the clothes I wore that day still on, most of the time on my stomach, window open (much like Thexare), and I cannot seem to stand wearing socks or any other foot coverings to bed. My feet demand feeling nothing but the covers.
