All throughout high school I had nowhere to really be and my parents gave me rides. When I got into college I had a lot of friends who could drive and for times when I didn't have a ride, I could easily take public trans or walked.

It was actually relatively easy to follow into the habit of not driving, especially since not long after starting college I started dating Zoso and he's always been willing to go with me to various places and drive us there.

It's actually quite rare that I've missed out on anything because I didn't have a ride to it, but I do agree that there's tons of freedom to be had in having a license, a car, a full tank of gas, and an open road.

Yeah, gas, insurance, registration, car payments (if you had any)...

They all followed along with my not wanting to drive. It involved too much financial commitment for the freedom.

That and for the longest time I feared getting behind the wheel because I completely doubted my competence in doing so--like I've always been afraid that by driving I'd hit something or run someone over and then that's a whole 'nother level of financial burden and so on.

*Starts singing that song from "Team America"*

"Freedom isn't free. No there's a hefty fuckin' fee."

Dude, that's twice in the same day I've posted lyrics to a DVDA song.

I think I've got Trey Parker on my mind.

Someone over at the 9th Wonders forums created a way to illustrate that we, the fans, stand by the writers in this strike: the 1000 cranes for Heroes project.

http://boards.9thwonders.com/index.php?showtopic=61061&st=0

Fold a few cranes, send them to the address shown at the link above. It's a simple statement, but it shows our support.

Posted on 11-08-07 06:32 PM, in Life's lessons: the things you learn people-watching Link
Honestly, I'm not much of a people-watcher, per se, but being in southern California where there are so many people of different cultures, backgrounds, colors, creeds and so on all jammed into one place you are sometimes privy to the strange things people do or say.

Feel free to add your own societal observations.

It's just that after the past few years of going to festivals, shows, conventions, and other public places, and now getting around to driving along with seeing how people write on the Internet, you begin to pick up on the patterns people have.

These are just things that I've actually seen, coupled with some opinions on the matter.

- Wealthy (usually white, and usually old, though anyone over 30 can be applied to this) people will go to free arts events geared toward the less fortunate in a community who don't usually get to experience art, and complain about EVERYTHING. This observation came while I was at the L.A.'s Grand Avenue Street Festival where the museums in the area were giving free admission that day and the L.A. Phil Harmonic was doing free shows in the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Throughout a chamber music presentation, at least 5 older, white folks who were sitting around Zoso and me were complaining loudly about the choice of music (as in the musicians were playing "mainstream tripe" like Mozart's Serenade No. 10. Yes, they really were complaining about this) as opposed to sitting back and enjoying a free show in a theater that most never get to go to.

I've since boiled this observation down to "People will get things for free and still complain about it." While at a free film festival that was being thrown for Tar Fest, half of the aging scenester-filled audience threw a fit about screen not being big enough, there not being enough art films, and how there wasn't enough to brag about to their avant-garde friends.

Ugh.

- People will eat (or at least order) anything if you give it a fancy enough name or pass it off as trendy. There are really no specifics for this one. I'm sure you can figure it out or have seen this going down before.

This also applies to things shown on TV. Example: Pinkberry yogurt places have been sprouting everywhere and often people go because they saw the girls eating it on "The Hills."

- Most people don't look servers/waiters/waitresses in the eye.

- Whenever people are walking along a lawn or grassy area, even if it would make their trip shorter to cross onto the grass, they still make a point in taking the long way, walking on the pavement and around the lawn. I see this at school A LOT.

- A bit of an adult observation: No one ever questions why in porn, the man pulls out and either ejaculates on the girl or has her perform oral while he's orgasming. This was brought up by an actor friend who included this at the end of his one-man show where he discussed the world's idiosyncrasies. He also mentioned that there is the possibility that young people who are too afraid to ask about sex and intimacy will watch porn to teach themselves about it and will find the degrading act a part of the normal intercourse routine without questioning it.

He definitely words it better than I ever could. When he mentioned it and how young people might take the wrong things as role models, the idea was somewhat more depressing in the way he detailed it.

- Everyone is a victim in their diary.

- People can quote The Simpsons better than the Bill of Rights.

Again, I say that you may add what you've observed. This is a completely open list.

I'll post more as they come.

It's kind of funny of box/brick-like Nintendo products were. Seems as gaming has progressed things fit into your hand better.

I've so far folded 110 paper cranes to send in to the producers' guild along with the everyone else's.

Thus far I'm seeing a lot of mixed reactions. When I'd posted the link about the 1000 Cranes for Heroes project on another board, not only did I get people belittling the project, but also posters, without any information posted to back their claims, raving about the writers needing to be kicked in the balls for being so greedy.

Riiiiiight.

If you are a real fan of a show, you'd feel that those who created something you love should receive a more fair share of the profits.

Posted on 11-12-07 12:20 PM, in Heroes RP: The Eclipse Link
Now that I can finally write this without fear of the power going out or the WiFi dying mid-post, I'll just put in that I don't RP much these days, but I'll give this a try.

Also, how far is "several years" past the show's timeline? I wrote in a few things that are somewhat timely, though it can work with a few adjustments.

Name: Cally Roxton : Cally is short for Callisto (as in the Greek myth and not in association with Xena or the X-Men 'verse), and while some call her Cally to feel a connection with her, others begrudgingly call her Callisto in full out of formality or in that they can never seem to reach a comfort level with her.

Age: Unknown, though it's probably on record somewhere : She's just lost track. For the RP's sake she's anywhere from 24 to 29, though some might confuse her for a teenager.

Nationality: Half Asian (Filipino), half Caucasian : Cally appears more Caucasian, however, upon closer inspection of the eyes and other features, it's hard to actually place her true nationality without asking. She is a U.S. citizen.

Power: Manifesting her imagination. Unlike the show's Candice or X-Men's Mystique who both change forms or create illusions that dissipate upon their losing consciousness/dying, Cally's mental creations are fully brought into existence and can be taken out just as quickly. Simply put, whatever Cally imagines becomes real.

Background: Orphaned early in life (Around 5 years old), Cally's father was a liberal senator and presidential hopeful. Both he and his wife were found murdered in a hotel room in Beijing during an international trip that a few U.S. representatives, including the vice president, were taking in order to continue friendly relations with other world leaders (assuming the world is somewhat shaken up due to its being imperiled a few times within the original "Heroes" storyline). Cally was taken in by her mother's father, Teofilo, whom having been a guerrilla in WWII during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines along with being a certified genius in physics and engineering, begins instructing an impressionable Cally in the ways of the world by training her in martial arts, survival techniques, and guerrilla warfare. Cally takes the lessons as a means of growing stronger and one day being able to track down her parents' killer(s).

Cally's first experience with her power, that she can remember, came shortly after she was left with her grandfather. She awoke in the middle of the night thinking she heard her mother calling her to breakfast. Walking into the kitchen she finds a woman at the stove, serving up a large stack of pancakes. When the woman turns to the child, Cally realizes, tears streaming down her face, that it is her mother! Running to the woman, hugging her and screaming her joy, Cally relates to her mother the "nightmare" she had about her parents dying and so on, as the woman looks at her daughter confused, sits her at the table and serves her some of the pancakes. Through a short discussion with her mother, and remembering that she's at her grandfather's house at 3 in the morning, eating pancakes with a woman who barely remembers anything about herself, Cally realizes that the woman isn't really her mother. Screaming her distaste, a vortex opens up, sucking the Mrs. Roxton clone into it and out of Cally's frame of existence (though for all we know, the woman is still alive in a parallel universe). It's from this point on that Cally never tries to make her parents live again using her power and she tries to be careful with what she dreams into reality whilst sleeping.

Teofilo, discovering Cally has a "gift," helps her hone the power by teaching her concentration techniques, mental control over what she makes real, and other methods to help her polish her "God-sent" talent. Little to Cally's realization or understanding, her grandfather was waiting for this day to come, expecting it when she'd go through puberty as when powers usually become apparent, but he suspects the traumatizing event of her parents dying as a trigger for the early arrival.

Maintaining a personal vendetta against her parents' murderer(s), and allowing her emotions to harden over the years, Cally goes on to learn more about the world of espionage and assassins, becoming a top-rated contracted killer herself.

Cally also becomes somewhat bored with her power in that when using it, nothing is a challenge any longer. If she ever needs money she can make the sky rain no-limit credit cards. If she wants someone dead, she could always simply will it so. It is with all of this regarded that Cally prefers doing many things manually without "cheating" at it too much.

The only thing I can really say happens to me during the holidays is that I get a bit depressed/aggravated since I sometimes go through seasonal depression (that is, mostly when I get bored or haven't done anything for a while). It's sort of the early darkness that does it. When there's light I can always feel like there's time to get things done.

I remember watching this with BREW Ninja (aka Zabuza) a few times. I think he also said something about wanting to remember how to sing that song.

Even in ignoring what someone else added later for subtitles, it's still pretty WTF on its own.

I approve.
