"Home," by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros." It plays at almost every single event held in Los Angeles, and about half of the bars I've walked into the last couple years.

It's become this hipster anthem of sorts. A friend of mine who does a stand-up routine that's more him philosophizing for two hours on stages plays it before shows (among other songs).

Anyway, if you don't know the song I'm talking about, it might be familiar hearing it below. It's been appearing in loads of commercials and trailers, specifically for indie flicks, lately.

She is, isn't she? I thought I was excited to see her, then I saw their Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, and Ms. Marvel. Hot damn...

EDIT: And apparently Psylocke is coming out next month.

When X2 was being made I kept hearing A LOT of people throwing a fit about rumors that he was going to be in it (which he technically was, his name anyway).

The main argument was that he's not an essential X-Man and not one of the important ones that should be in the movies.

My theory for all the Gambit hate is probably that he was like Twilight back in the day. A lot of teen and tween-age girls got really into X-Men because they thought he was hot and thus it was an influx of fangirls and fair-weather fans, which is something that so-called "serious" fans HATE.

Well, there was also Death Race, which had the amazing line uttered by Joan Allen's character during the peak action: "OK, cocksucker. Fuck with me and we'll see who shits on the sidewalk."

It's so funny that it's a huge deal right now that it was discovered that Chinese prison guards were forcing inmates to play WoW to farm gold for them which they'd sell.

Anyway, I do wonder if California's finally going to carry out the executions of people sentenced to death row. In this state getting the death sentence is 20-30 years (on average) of waiting around and then maybe having your life end at the hands of the justice system. By the time your execution finally rolls around everyone forgot the severity of what you did and protests the system on your behalf saying you must have seen the light while you were in there. See: Tookie Williams.

Yeah, I had seen some of that. On a side note, I adore Louis Theroux. He has some intense (though thoroughly amusing) interviews.

This news piece just came out in the L.A. Times about South Africa having a big issue with violence against homosexuals and mentions the Uganda legislation.

This sort of caught me, though I wasn't shocked to read it:

In South African townships there's a crime dubbed "corrective rape," rape to "cure" lesbians, and sometimes gay men and transsexuals. They are told they are being taught a lesson: how to be a real woman or man, survivors say.

I liked his costume better when they put him on X-Men Evolution.

Anyway, it's funny when you look back on scenes between him and Rogue, especially when you try to keep in mind that these all happened on a show meant for KIDS (Bonus that the corner of the screen shows this was aired on the Disney channel):

A real-life Deadpool is patrolling a small city in Washington state

Real superheroes usually create their own crime-fighting monikers, but one freelance do-gooder in Wenatchee, Washington (a.k.a. "The Apple Capital of the World") has assumed the mantle of Marvel Comics' "Merc With A Mouth," the deranged assassin Deadpool. Malefactors beware.

Fortunately for the citizens of Wenatchee, their Deadpool is a mercenary of munificence who just wants to help folks in need. The Wenatchee World recently interviewed the hero (via pay phone) and learned why he became the protector of this north-central Washington city of approximately 30,000 residents:

Wenatchee's Deadpool said he chose his character "because I allied with his humor and his ideal that what once was bad can become something better and good. .... And not his outlook on heroism or his methods." [...] Deadpool said the idea to dress up and help people "just came to me one day."

He acknowledged, however, that the costume thing has its drawbacks. It makes him hot when the sun's out, and it seems to put some people off.

"I tried to help a woman out of the rain the other day and she didn't really want to take my umbrella," he said. "I think she was kind of intimidated."

But why did this 20-to-30-year-old Wanatchee resident assume the identity of an unhinged murderer? To become a beacon of hope to others, of course.

"It takes a certain kind of crazy to do this," he said, "But it takes a certain kind of sanity to help others. I want to inspire people to what a model citizen could be and what a helping hand can be like."

If you're in the Wenatachee metro area, you can summon Deadpool and his crime-fighting prowess by sending him an electronic mail on the world wide web:

Deadpool has been putting up flyers around town so people know what he's up to and won't be alarmed when he rushes to help them. He asks anyone who needs help with just about anything to contact him via email at ncwdeadpool@hotmail.com.

I'm convinced this is actually the Deadpool from comic books. He finally broke through the fourth wall and was in the mood for a Golden Delicious. Also, I hope we soon see a Cable-inspired vigilante who's grafted a carburetor onto his bicep and fights crime with a panoply of pouches festooned about his torso.

Thoughts?

Seems more like Kick-Ass.

The voice acting for Gambit right after he comes to after falling for Morph's trick (around the 4:40 mark) is just awful, though.

Still, I miss the ol' swamp rat.

I only listened to "Born This Way" for the first time after this whole Gaga supposedly rejecting his song thing happened (though later saying it was her manager or whatever). Anyway, I much prefer "Perform This Way."

It's a damn good song for something he put together on really short notice.

As for the whole end of the world name and cover, it just seems appropriate in that there's just so much talk about the end coming soon - May 21, Oct. 18 (now it's Oct. 21 or something), Dec. 21, 2012, etc. Apparently the world is going to be destroyed some time soon, so this could easily be his last album.

A bit of an update on the situation.

My grandmother is about to turn 90. My mom is trying to throw her a surprise party. No one is flying down for this, and no one from L.A. is willing to make the staggering 20 minute drive.

In spite of the lack of enthusiasm, Lola's primarily living with my aunt in L.A. now, but my uncle who lives over an hour away has to come by the aunt's house to pick her up and bring her to our house on Fridays and vice versa on Mondays. It's not as though my aunt or my unemployed cousin could just drop her off themselves. Brandon and I have gone to pick her up a few times, but this whole having my uncle do it was apparently part of an agreement so no one could try to claim he did nothing in the process of taking care of Lola.

She's gotten a lot worse, and yet still playing mind games with people. For instance, she's telling my aunt she doesn't want to come here because we aren't feeding her, which is BULLSHIT. We almost have to force-feed her because she constantly refuses to eat. She keeps playing all of the sides against each other. Last night at a Mexican restaurant she through a fit over the fact that they didn't have clam chowder.

And to comment on the cleanliness of my aunt's house -- HOLY FUCK. She keeps collecting chihuahuas and she's up to nearly 30 dogs IN HER HOUSE. When we've gone to pick Lola up, we have to go through the garage and into the kitchen where you can't see countertop under the piles of uneaten, rotting, greasy food with the floor dirty and piles of things EVERYWHERE with the occasional dog barking and nipping at your feet.

Lola's been telling them that she's deaf and blind now. When I called her on this in front of my aunt (because Lola, despite the use of only one eye, is actually quite adept at seeing things in the distance. She was remarking on the length of a ship on the horizon when we were sitting in a restaurant in Seal Beach just a couple days before), my aunt refused to believe me.

And every-fucking-time we get Lola back she hasn't changed her socks and she smells like urine and fecal matter. After my graduation last week, she and my mom got into an argument about her diapers, because she says they're getting too heavy. She's able to go to the bathroom and change her own diapers, she simply refuses to change them until they fall off because they're so full.

On a positive note, she was ecstatic when I graduated and laughed uproariously, louder than I'd ever heard her laugh in my life, as I ran while pushing her in the wheelchair we rented. It was a great moment between us.

So, that's the story up 'til now. Still no caregiver. My parents can't afford it, and the L.A. aunt who stole all of Lola's money won't foot the bill on that. The Bay Area aunt doesn't give a shit. She's phoning it in at this point, only concerned with the money. My uncle, well, he's just doing the bare minimum, allied with the L.A. aunt.

The job search is on, though it's been mostly spent putting out speculative e-mails to a few people.

I'm super-stoked, though. Just checked my grades. Straight As and a CR (for my internship which was credit/no credit).

I'M FUCKING DONE!

We return you now to our regularly scheduled broadcasting: the soul-crushing job search.

I'm wondering if it's supposed to be Conquest, who carries a bow but no arrows and rides a pale horse.

That would make Al Famine.

I like that Al's horse has his hair.

Tell me about it.

Some situation came up a month or so ago where the L.A. aunt was saying she wanted to call the police on us for some reason or another and my dad called her bluff telling her to go ahead and do it since she's committing elder abuse.

When my grandfather died we went through the same shit. L.A. and San Francisco aunt fought over money, while my mom and uncle cried.

Watching Flight of the Conchords season 2. Never seen the first.

It's pretty hilarious.

I don't feel as though I'd been missing out, but rather that this is the right time in my life that this show feels relevant to me, making it seem all the more brilliant. But yeah, I dig it.

Yeah, I'll definitely look into getting it. I'm only watching season 2 because that's what the city library had and I figured I'd give it a chance.

Still watching it, but now I feel like watching "Spaced." I guess this job search is making me feel like Daisy.

As far as I could tell Marvel probably wouldn't win. It's fair use.

He's not making any money, for one thing, and that's crucial. The other critical points are the amount of usage and the nature of it and how it might affect the original.

What he's doing is not harming Deadpool's effect on society (in fact it's probably aiding their image that someone admires one of their anti-heroes so much that he's emulating the character in real life), and in turn he's probably boosting awareness of the character, which is not negatively reflecting on Deadpool sales.

Again, the crucial point is commercial usage, which this is not. Case would be thrown out.

However, Marvel has had a history of idiotic cases - trying trademark the word "superhero" for one.
