Ricky Martin was my absolute favorite thing when I was 14.

Still kinda like his music. Reminds me of this summer I spent in Hawaii back in '99.

This Fuck You's over a week old, but it still irks me thinking about it for some reason.

So there's this table at this museum two Sundays ago, giving away free samples of Russian food and beverages. Mob scene, obviously. Brandon and I are waiting our turns and everyone who just got there is pretty much jumping into the fray and making mad swipes and grabs at the table, snatching things out of the women's hands who are laying down fresh samples.

This woman starts using her daughter (presumably) as a shield, urging her into the mess while sticking close behind. Sort of playing this "Let my child through so she can experience whatever you people are fighting for because children ALWAYS get priority in such things." She gets up to the table, pulls out her shirt and gathers up as many things as she can into it, and THEN LEAVES THE CHILD BEHIND IN THE MOB.

No, "Hey, let's go!" or anything. The moment I saw this I yelled in her direction about her great parenting skills and she ignored me.

I can't believe the audacity and carelessness.

Yeah, Casey didn't go so far as having earrings, but looking at things like his pants and the way he carries himself, just reminds me so much of him. Oh well.

It's kind of funny looking at Sara's Facebook wall. There are so many people leaving messages going, "I'm so happy for you guys!!!" These are mostly teenage girls and none of the family. Getting engaged and pregnant at 17 sounds like such a fairy tale, I'm sure. She still needs to get her GED since she hasn't been going to school consistently throughout her high school career.

Anyway, I don't mean to sound judgmental. Shit happens, especially when you're a teenager in love, and I can only wish them the best at this point.

So yay, growing up and realizing that at some point in your life nothing will ever be as it was. Honestly, I was looking forward to the big, fancy wedding her parents were going to give her in Washington, but because she got pregnant and needs to get married as soon as she turns 18 and to make sure they get on his insurance, there's not going to be a wedding.

But on a non-Sara note, I aced all of my classes this last semester. Just waiting for the diploma in the mail. Had a great day away from the computer yesterday. Looks like I might get another day like it tomorrow with any luck since I need to be in Chinatown tomorrow night for a meeting.

Because I only do this meme when I'm THAT bored...

I'm cleaning my room and wearing a faire bodice and elf ears, for crying out loud.

What was the last...

...thing you ate?
- A salad I made with creamy feta dressing, cut up pieces of turkey, and mushrooms.

...person you talked to on the phone?
- Guy, telling me he's mailing me the corrections for the newsletter.

...person you e-mailed/private messaged?
- Either Guy or Lee.

...person you hugged?
- Brandon.

...person you kissed?
- Brandon.

...time you laughed?
- Rolling down the stairs in a giant ball of laundry a few minutes ago. Scared the shit out of one of my cats while the other didn't care. For about three seconds there, I was a katamari.

...time you cried?
- A few days ago, cracking over the stress.

...movie you watched?
- I think the last thing I watched in theaters was Your Highness.

...DVD you watched?
- The Adventures of Robin Hood, starring Errol Flynn. I was surprised to realize I liked Captain Blood better.

...video tape you watched?
- Man... a REALLY old copy of The Nutcracker ballet performed.

...song you listened to?
- "Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran.

...book you finished?
- I can't remember. I've been massively failing at writing these down, but then again I've been doing a lot of research projects lately involving reading and re-reading pieces of books.

...heart-to-heart you had with someone?
- Probably Brandon.

...person you met?
- MarieSam.

...person who died in your life?
- Merv.

...new food you tried?
- This REALLY juicy Conchinita pibil burrito from a place in Echo Park.

...new thing you tried (event, action)?
- Made jam.

...time you went around the house in just your underwear?
- Not sure.

...time you weren't fully sober?
- Hmm, I think right after e-mailing in my final paper Brandon and I did the Rogue Festival and I had enough to find stupid things amusing.

...you "geeked" out?
- Played around in the interactive Da Vinci exhibit yesterday.

...thing you read in the bathroom?
- If anything one of the home improvement magazines my parents have in their bathroom.

...bargain you made?
- Bought an antique-looking mermaid-shaped bottle opener for $4.

...thing you planned?
- Heading to a Houdini exhibit tomorrow before I have to be in Chinatown for an activist group meeting.

...award you won?
- Does graduating from university count?

...piece of toast you had?
- A warmed piece of pan dulce with my homemade strawberry vanilla jam.

...present you gave?
- Same as before, I think.

...porno you saw?
- Don't recall.

...song you sang in the shower?
- N/A.

...song you had stuck in your head?
- Different songs out of the Nutcracker suite, specifically "La Mère Gigone et les Polichinelles."

...thing you marked on your calendar?
- Either that I'm going to San Francisco's gay pride festival with Stitch next weekend or the American Gods reading Neil Gaiman is doing hosted by Patton Oswalt.

...errand you ran?
- Picking up a converter at Radio Shack for the Commodore Vic-20 to see if it will work before we sell it.

...drink you had?
- Rose Lemonade.

...cool thing you found?
- This taxidermy shop full of skeletons and critters in jars. Picked up some pheasant feathers.

...time you brushed your hair?
- Dunno.

...person you talked to over AIM, YIM, etc?
- Brandon, on Facebook chat. WEEKS ago. I was at my internship during that time.

...thing you bought?
- The TV converter mentioned above.

...game you played?
- I think I'll go pop in God of War 2 right now just for shits.

...new place you visited?
- This vintage toy shop in Echo Park.

...thing you celebrated?
- Finishing this 40-page newsletter for a client - went all over Los Angeles and hit up a bunch of museums. Yes, I know I'm lame. When Brandon and I celebrated our seventh anniversary a couple months ago, we went to a freak show with animals with extra heads and limbs, a wilderness-themed bar, and ate at an Irish pub.

...dream you had?
- Can't remember.

...thing you dressed up for (costume/formal/etc)?
- Was "cosplaying" while working as an extra for "The Guild."

...website you visited outside of the board?
- I have about 15 tabs open and I've been flipping through them this whole time. Hm, Facebook makes up for about 3 of them.

He posted a picture of "the ring" on Facebook a month ago and tagged her on it. And they JUST found out she was pregnant this past week. Getting engaged and married is one thing. Adding a baby COMPLETELY changes the picture, and that concerns me since he'll probably leave her not long after.

Brandon and Sara's cousin (well, second-cousin) got engaged and pregnant at 17 a few years ago. Same chick who swore up and down that breast feeding was gross and that breasts were meant for men to suck on. Every time Katie came up in conversation, Sara would comment about how stupid she was and so on.

Yup...

Anyway, congratulations on the test. Is it like the SAT and you can take it again to get a higher score or something? Either way, I'm hoping for a high percentile for you.

Fuck the fact that this client I'm doing the 40-page newsletter for offered the first guy who tried to do complete it (and FAILED) $600 and I have yet to be offered anything despite finishing the newsletter and submitting the new edits today. As far as I can tell he's still getting credit in the newsletter for design, so he probably collected SOMETHING.

I sent an e-mail with the new PDF of the edits to the client and asked about payment, so we'll see where this goes.

Fuck that I can never seem to get my room AND closet completely clean. It's just a constant shifting of shit from one space to another.

My room is looking AWESOME, though. The closet... not so much. It's a walk-in closet you can even set one foot into.

Indeed.

I busted up when he said "rill." That was exactly what I kept saying to myself when she kept saying it.

And why would a 16-year-old need to reassure people that she has never done porn?

Posted on 06-22-11 08:11 PM, in Obama Announces Withdrawl of 33,000 Troops from Afghanistan (10,000 This Year) Link
SOURCE

Since this is being announced RIGHT NOW, expect updates:

President Obama is delivering a speech at the White House announcing plans to withdraw 33,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan by September of next year.

The president says that the withdrawal signals the beginning of the end of the war that began shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The U.S. and allies have agreed to turn over security responsibility to the Afghans in the year 2014.

Some highlights of the president's speech:

8:07 p.m. -- Obama says he has a simple goal for Afghanistan: "No safe-haven from which al Qaeda or its affiliates can launch attacks against our homeland, or our allies."

8:06 p.m. -- Obama cites progress in Afghanistan -- the death of Osama bin Laden, rollbacks of Taliban gains, improved Afghan security forces.

BUT: "Huge challenges remain. This is the beginning -- but not the end -- of our effort to wind down this war."

8:04 p.m. -- Obama gets quickly to the numbers: "We are meeting our goals. As a result, starting next month, we will be able to remove 10,000 of our troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year, and we will bring home a total of 33,000 troops by next summer."

8:02 p.m. -- The president opens by citing a somber anniversary: It has been nearly ten years since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the cause of the initial Afghanistan invasion. Obama says that when he took office, he needed a new Afghanistan strategy because the nation had been distracted by Iraq -- and he sent more than 30,000 new troops in "one of the most difficult decisions that I've made as President."

8:01 p.m. -- The president is in the East Room, ready to go.

More updates:

8:12 p.m. -- Obama again pledges to end the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and cites their cost: "Over the last decade, we have spent a trillion dollars on war, at a time of rising debt and hard economic times. Now, we must invest in America's greatest resource -- our people.

8:10 p.m. -- Obama says these wars will end -- and that the United States must be smarter about future conflicts: "When threatened, we must respond with force – but when that force can be targeted, we need not deploy large armies overseas."

8:09 p.m. -- The president talks about the toll of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars have had here at home: "This has been a difficult decade for our country. We have learned anew the profound cost of war -- a cost that has been paid by the nearly 4500 Americans who have given their lives in Iraq, and the over 1500 who have done so in Afghanistan."

Watching "Manor House" now. It came out around the same time as "Frontier House," but in England and it takes place during the Edwardian Era. It mostly follows the servants and how hard and constraining their lives can be.

I'm trying to track down "Texas Ranch House," which was a lot like "Frontier House" but instead of it being homesteaders it's about cowboys and a ranching family. I've also been looking for "1900 House," the first of these PBS reality shows.

They lost another director. Apparently they were REALLY depending on Keanu Reeves signing onto the project and when he rejected it, it threw off their entire production schedule. Their latest director pretty much just said fuck it and left.

As far as I know he's still playing Spike in the live action Cowboy Bebop, but there hasn't been any news on it past the announcement that it was going to happen. I know that he specifically requested that role.

Since Keanu is part Chinese some producers seek him out so they can wave the Diversity flag.

So we've seen photos of you... most of you. What about your rooms - your personal space?

Here's a pic of my recently cleaned up room:

Took it standing on our bed. The person in the comfy green chair is the boyfriend of 7+ years. We've lived together for about 4 years and I'm FINALLY hanging a few things on the wall.

The shining bronze thing hanging on the wall, on the left, is an antique bedwarmer from the Chicken Ranch - the "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" as it were.
