Hey y'all! Lord Alexandor directed me here, mentioned that I should point out that I'm not him. We're just related, that's all. Some of you might have guessed who I am--rather, who I was--but that's all gone now, thank the kami, and I'd appreciate it if you didn't hold it against me. I don't expect I'll post much, but when I do it'll hopefully be well thought out and insightful, and not just spam. And as much as I love a good simbattle, I don't expect I'll do too much of that either, at least until I finish tweaking some things.

Look forward to chatting with y'all, and having some fun on the way.

(*Soul_Of_Steel puts on "Computer Science Major" hat)

We seem to be getting confused on subjects here. Parallel processing does split tasks between two CPUs, but those CPUs have to be in a single motherboard designed to support multiple CPUs and divide the load between them. In general, this allows a system to do multiple tasks with relative ease, since one processor can handle the OS and background services while the other handles your application/game/whatever. Memory sharing tends to be an issue in these systems, but I digress.

What NucklearKnight seems to be asking about is distributed computing, where two systems are connected by a network and share their work that way. Another term for this sort of setup is a Beowulf Cluster. These are better for computations and research simulation, since the network connection is MUCH slower than the internal busses, and are really only for fun and 'wow factor,' not the average home user. I couldn't tell you how to set one up, but I'm sure google can help with that. I'll point out that having different a different OS on each machine will probably prevent you from making a cluster, but I'm not positive.

So, short answer: yes, but it won't get you much of a boost in power.

As I recall, the anime series ended just after Ranma and his mother were reunited. They never bothered making anime episodes for the last arc or two of the manga. Which, of course, is why I have always preferred to read the manga instead of watch the anime on any given series: anime is full of filler, twists the original author(s)'s idea, and all we get in exchange is some music and sound effects. Plus, I can read a volume of manga in fourty minutes or so, which can cover as much as five hours of anime episodes *cough-narutochuuninexams-cough*.

The movie was very well done, you just have to remember that it wasn't a remake. It was an update. Transformers have been getting more and more complex in design since G1, and this really has potential to reach out to a new generation of fans who might not have much exposure to transformers except as nostalgia from their parents. The movie was amazing, a short ramp-up leading to one action scene after another, complete with a poke at what an idiot the president is. I'm pulling a torrent of the film right now, actually. Just saw it this morning and I already want to see it again.

Why was it all about america you ask?

I bought the prequel novel a few weeks back, finished the thing in about five hours. Turns out, back when they launched Apollo 11, Sector 7 secretly launched a second ship, built directly from bits and pieces of Megatron (aka the Ice Man). Long story short, the crew gets sucked into a wormhole when the ship malfunctions, and they end up stranded in some distant corner of the galaxy. Guess who shows up?

Spoiler:
Autobots. Decepticons. Huge battle in space. The ships crew radios back about the aliens over some fancy FTL transmission device, and lets America know these things are out there, and they'll be coming here some day, looking for the cube. Then they kamikaze their ship into Starscream's face so the transformers can't follow them home. Wicked awesome.

So yeah, some part of our government knew those things were out there. They weren't exactly ready for them, but since we had the Big Bad Guy in lockdown, it makes sense that we'd be the ones fighting them. And we had what they wanted.

Also, point of interest: The boombox was probably a really badly done attempt at Soundwave. Emphasis on BADLY.

EDIT: Just found this. slightly related to topic

I just finished boxing up about 3/4ths of my anime collection in preparation for moving it to my new apartment, so I could give you a few titles off my DVD rack.

Kino's Journey - slice-of-life type series, very compelling storyline. And it has a talking motorcycle! What could be more cool than that, eh?
Daphne in the Brilliant Blue - action, fanservice, mystery, fanservice, stunning artwork, fanservice, and a plot that actually works in the real world. Oh, did I mention the fanservice? It's completely unnecessary of course, the series would have been plenty awesome without it, but whatever, right?
Haibane Renmei - deep, soulful, and done by the people who brought us Serial Experiments Lain. And if you've never seen Lain, then what the hell is wrong with you?

Without knowing your preferences that's a good start. All three of those should appeal to just about anyone.

I'm a Jolt man, myself. Lots of flavors, great taste, and just enough to give me a boost during an all-nighter. Energy drinks are too pricey for regular consumption though, so I use them as special treats, and no more than the one can a day, often a max of three a week.

Of course, seeing as I've now graduated college and have a job, I might be getting more in my system, since I can afford it now, but I'm trying to lose my caffeine addiction so the stuff will start working on me again. Right now it's mostly the sugar rush that's doing the energy thing, and I can get that eating sugar cubes!

I'm not entirely clear on what you're asking for here. If you're upgrading from 98 to XP, there should not be much to do really. For safety, you could burn backup copies of your data onto CD or DVD before you install XP, but unless it tells you that it is formatting your hard drive, you shouldn't lose any data. If you REALLY want to be safe, you could get another hard drive installed, remove your current one, install XP, and then plug the old drive back into the system. Then you'd still have all your old files, and you could even boot to the old OS if you needed to for some reason. But if you just want to transfer your settings (desktop icons, start menu program listings, folder views, etc) to the new installation, I think there's a wizard for that in XP.

Seeing as a lot of the series relies on a general knowledge of Japanese folklore and traditions, I'm not surprised people often find it a confusing series to watch. I watched it once, was horribly puzzled, and then took a course in mythologies around the world. Studying the Japanese myths helped me make sense of a lot of the things in Blue Seed.

For example: Kushinada was one of eight daughters belonging to an old couple. The Orochi, an eight-headed dragon, came once a year to devour one of the couple's daughters, and they were powerless to stop it. Susa-no-oh was a greater god, and the brother of Amaterasu, the sun goddess, and he offered to beat the Orochi and save Kushinada in return for being allowed to marry her. He transformed the girl into a hair comb to hide her from the Orochi, and trapped it by creating a pavilion with eight gates, and eight bowls of sake (japanese rice wine). When the orochi put its heads through the gates to drink the offering, the gates slammed shut, trapping it. Susa-no-oh cut off the Orochi's heads, and saved Kushinada, whom he married.

Seriously, if you go out and do a little reading, you'll find that a lot of stuff in anime starts making a whole lot more sense than it did before.

One of the best examples of an anime that makes no sense at all without a good grounding in Japanese folklore is Urusei Yatsura, known in the States as Lum-Lum, by Rumiko Takahashi. Nearly every character in the series is the representation of some figure in folklore, and without knowing what those things are, it's almost impossible to figure out what's going on. Bo-BoBo BoBo-BoBo is another series that's hard to follow without some japanese background, but at least it's funny even without that. Like I said before: if you do a bit of homework, everything becomes clear.

She can stop time, but she's not allowed to do so. Technically, any actual time manipulation, including looking into the future or going back in time to change the past, is not allowed, though I don't remember if it was Queen Serenity's orders, or some other reason.

Just finished unpacking my new apartment, and found some more great titles.

Gatekeepers: classic series, I think every true anime fan should see this.
Tokyo Underground: superpowers galore, and more action than you can shake a stick at.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The quintessential "Oh-wow-Giant-Robots-but-my-God-my-God-why-is-it-raping-my-mind?" anime. If you understand what you saw the first time you finish this series, you're better than me. Took me two marathons to figure out most of it.
Dual: Speaking of Evangelion... This is by the good folks who gave us Tenchi Muyo, and it's a lot funnier if you've seen both Tenchi and Evangelion before you watch this.
Kamichu: What would YOU do if you woke up one morning and realized you were a deity?
Cowboy Bebop: please say you've seen this. It was on Cartoon Network for at least two years. Ultimate space opera
Outlaw Star: Spaceships with wrestling/judo action. What's not to love?

Anything by CLAMP: Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, Angelic Layer, Magic Knight Rayearth, Tokyo Babylon, RG Veda, and a slew of manga titles to go along with. For deep plot, fully realized characters, and really awesome art, there's simply no other way to go.

Posted on 08-25-07 01:09 PM, in Laptops... and desktops too Link
If you want a laptop, get one that you can afford, and one that comes with a good support package. If a laptop breaks, replacement parts are VERY hard to come by, so you generally need to send it in for service. Most importantly, make sure you check the battery life. A great laptop isn't going to do you much good if its power runs dry in half an hour.

As for desktops, your best bet is to buy the parts and assemble it yourself. If you don't know what you need, visit a computer parts shop (not a Best Buy or big chain store, those people are mostly idiots, a smaller local shop is better) and ask them to help you out. Better, find someone local who's a computer nerd and ask them to help you pick out parts and whatnot.

As far as comparing specs, you have to balance performance with price. A more powerful processor is not always worth the extra $200 if you don't plan to run the very latest games at their maximum resolution. Ditto for video cards. If you're buying from a parts store, ask for the second or third newest generation of equipment, and you'll usually get the best deal. If you're building a computer online at a Dell or Gateway website, try to stay with the middle options pricewise, they're usually the better deal, though not always. If you have to, get out a calculator and figure out the cost-per-unit of the primary spec on the part: i.e. gigabytes of harddisk space per dollar of cost, or gigs of RAM per dollar, or whatever. Take the best deal out of those, and you'll usually end up happy.

Of course, if you're building a gaming rig, find the recommended specs on your favorite new game, and buy something a bit better than those. Your new machine should last a few years without needing any tuning up if you do it that way.

Yes, you can get your parts cheaper on the internet, but if you aren't a hardcore computer person, you wouldn't know what to get, which is why I suggested visiting a store to get a better idea. Also, I've gotten parts from a store that were way cheaper than the Newegg price, just because the stuff wasn't selling and the store needed to move the inventory.

And I disagree the compaq statement. I've had two laptops by them, both of which were what I like to call 'dumpster specials'. That's where a business or school is upgrading their systems and they either throw out or sell their old hardware. Considering each one was at least two years old by the time I got them, they were amazingly stable and durable. Their customer support is horrible though, so I suppose you wouldn't want to get a compaq if you couldn't repair things yourself.

She's an Onigiri, or Riceball. She had a few flashbacks to it in the series, when kids would make her a riceball when playing a game involving fruits. At least, I think that's it. It's been a few years, and I don't own a copy.

Edit: spelling

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but... If you want a laptop to play games on, I recommend you get a compaq/HP with as close to the same specs as you'd want in a desktop gaming machine. Be warned, however, that HP machines have a tendency to start flipping out as they get older, and you won't be under warranty once it starts happening. I've had 2 compaq laptops, both were throwaways from my dad's office. Both lasted about 2 years, and one started dying rapidly after that was up. I sold the other, but it was so ancient it barely ran WIN98. It's hit-and-miss.

And you could always bootcamp a mac to run windows. Or use Vista, I think microsoft's got vista for macs now. Macs are amazing pieces of machinery, with great customer service plans and highly stable, but lack gaming power without a windows install.
