Again, I'm using this area as a discussion board for anything in the storylines that might need explaining, or if you think your character just wouldn't act the way I've written. Basically, this forum is a sounding board for my series of intertwined stories.

If you're confused about all my stories, I'll give you a quick overview:

There all connected to each other. They all occur (at least once I update them all to catch up) at the same time, on the same island, on the same planet. Characters impact each other's stories, but in order to get the full story you have to read them all to get an idea of what the other characters may or may not know.

For example, in Darkness: Pathetique, Ryan was on his way to meet up with Crystle and Tom from Showers, but was impeded by something that is the aftereffect of something that will happen in Boundaries Unseen but hasn't yet. As a result, Tom and Crystle discover Ryan's empty car, but before this are blinded momentarily by an extremely bright light...the product of Pat's mind from Domain. And so, and so forth.

While the reader may know what's going on, sometimes the characters won't. On top of that, each story has its own plot to work with along with the major plot that all the stories share.

Index of Works
Boundaries Unseen
Dark Diaries
Darkness: Pathetique
Domain
Paradox Island
Showers

Now, someone reply and I can give a quick storyline background including island schematics and key races on the planet. A quick history on the Mainland, GlobalNet, and other important things you'll encounter. And, if you have any questions, let me know. If you want to, I can even insert you as a minor character to make a minor appearance that could be instrumental in the plot...Maybe.

Well, you wanted Garrett to like live in one of the few cities on the island, and above one of the nicer cities, in Oakridge...

...so, as soon as I figure out what species he is, what he does, where he works, and stuff...then I can work him in. But, I can't work him in until I get Tom to go away...either by accidental death (but he's actually instrumental to the overall plot by
Spoiler:
becoming evil
) or by some other form...

...I guess I have to write out Twinkie Tom from Showers and write him into the other stories then
Spoiler:
work him into his own story starting further on down the timeline starting at a key point in the story to provide his vital background information in hopes of bringing together everything we'll need to understand why he's doing whatever it is he'll be doing...

You'll find out in the next few days.

I took this:
While sitting naked in the field after the enveloping cloud episode, Ryan decides he should find out at least where he is. Clothes, or their lack of presence, are not going to keep him from finding what happened. The three suns begin to set, the first one—the biggest one—just cresting the horizon. I guess I won’t be able to meet up with Crystle and Tom, he thought to himself.

...section out from Darkness: Pathetique because it didn't make sense. Thanks for pointing it out, Elara.

Good question, first things first: There are no humans as we know them. They've been obliterated by a higher alien race, and Earth no longer exists. In its image, a second planet was created from scratch...Earth II. Earth Prime, or Terran as its referred to sometimes, is just a dust cloud. The few that survived--not human, but a permutation--live on Mars and the Moon. A couple millions miles away, just past Alpha Centauri, lies the synthetic Earth II, with it's three suns of varying intensities, and two moons.

The higher race, which will later be identified because it's crucial to the story, so I'm not elaborating here, created the newer humans based on the original concept of the utopian society they wished to create on Earth Prime. Unfortunately, their first experiment with the pure humans perished since they were too closed minded to see themselves as one race rather than the individual races, sub-cultures, and categories that existed. So, experiment over, phase two begin.

On Earth II, the new breed considered an evolved version of humans, the reigning species are known as meta-humans. They're all human beings cross-breeded with an extra strand of DNA from another alien species. And, while only a small percentage of the total population actually remotely resembles the original human species, they're all still considered meta-human. The previous human element contained a double helix of DNA, both of human origin. The newer meta-humans possess an extra helix, producing the trademark meta-human triple helix, of an additional alien race. The myriad combinations produce evolved humans with the inherent abilities of select species, giving them a higher view of the world...allowing them to achieve that utopian society the higher beings so envisioned.

Where the stories come in, a major war has taken place centuries after the creation of Earth II, when it opened itself up to other alien species to live on the planet. Much to the dismay of the higher beings, some of the meta-humans felt that these alien species don't belong on their planet, and thus, after a great war, the planet's culture has split: the gentle, higher planed meta-humans residing on the large island of Paradox; and the closed-minded warring meta-humans (whom have renownced the term meta-human, and simply refer to themselves as para-humans) whom reside on the Mainland. The other continents of the planet are mostly inhabited by random species of animal, so most of the world's activity centers on Paradox Island and the Mainland.

The Mainland, however, has recently changed face and decided to make amends with the meta-humans and other species. It seems fishy, but the story will take on that route. Mainlanders want to reestablish the utopian society of old, but it's going to be difficult. Or, are they after something that only Paradox Islanders have?

Okay, enough background.

Meta-humans have no definite descriptions. But, I can summarize the characters introduced thus far, and maybe that will help until I can provide a definite race list. It'll also help if I ever plan on spinning the storylines off into an RPG.

Earth II Species: Paradox Island

(and yes, I know I could have created a table, I chose not to)

Lastname, First Name------Species-------3rd Helix------Comments

Almodovar, Lee---------------Meta-human--Eckta'arian--Appearance is human-like, yet possesses a strong knowledge of computers, mathematics, and logic as well as fighting tactical abilities. However, since combination of human and Eckta'arian DNA, he possess little ability to actually physically harm anyone. Depends heavily on technology for conflict management. Improved agility and reflexes, darkened red eyes optimized for night vision, enhanced internal awareness of lifeforce energies. Trademark Eckta'arian nose ridge only distinguishing feature.

(Unknown), Crystle---------Meta-human--Nisian--------Appearance is more Nisian-like; tall, yet slightly slender, long flowing hair, enhanced combat skills, yet highly protective of nature. Enhanced intelligence, able to handle complex equations and theories like child's play. Trademark Nisian green eyes, enhanced olfactory senses (smell) for detection of changes in nature.

(Unknown), Tom-----------Nisian-----------N/A------------Native Nisian from the planetary system of Nisia, possesses all native abilities of a Nisian including surpassed ability of numerical manipulation, ability to manipulate nature to his will, and excellent agility useful in hand-to-hand combat. A rogue from his species, he migrated to Earth II to follow a more intellectual career rather than enlisting in his planet's military forces. Trademark Nisian green eyes, Nisian lighter skin pigmentation, and Nisian green blood.

Now, I have to sit down and map out the other races, but I'll continue the post after someone else posts on Garrett, Christine Demarantus, Brandon Demarantus, Rosy, Tracy, Big Tom, and the slain Night Squadron officer.

No, I see what happened. I accidently reversed them. Well, next post, I'll actually summarize the intent, characteristics, and appearances of the full races, followed by the meta-races, then the remainder of the characters. Also, I'll explain the last name thing and go into further depth on the descriptions of Edge City and Erdu, followed by a later post on Zedari, Zedari Field, Xodan Flats, and Palau Town.

Later on, I'll reveal a few more things about the Mainland, and the conflicts that led to where the stories start now.

When Earth II was created, the higher beings felt that they should keep elements of Earth Prime, but felt the need to erase other elements. One of those was that of married lastnames.

On Terran (Earth Prime), when one got married (be they straight or gay), they took the lastnames of their husbands, a hyphenated version of both lastnames, or kept their lastnames individually with no change. This way, some generations died, and other lived on. This often brought anxiety to the humans of Terran, so it was done away with on Earth II.

Paradoxian, as well as Mainland, law states that beings upon making a marriage-like union (since a marriage doesn't have the same connotation as it had once on Terran) must take a mutated version of both their lastnames, thereby effectively terminating any existence of a generation...

For example, in the series thus far we've learned of only one lastname (besides mine because I'm still single) permutation: Demarantus. Christine's maiden name, if you can call it that since it's also a permutation of her parents, was Amarantus. Brandon's maiden last name, also a permutation of his parents, was Demaria. Upon marriage (for lack of a better term) they decided upon Demarantus...combining the "De" and "marantus" part of both last names. Therefore, both the legacy of Demaria and Amarantus were terminated, producing the newer Demarantus...which will in turn be terminated if they choose to have children that later on marry other people, and so on...

Since the Mainland has taken to rebelling, they've adopted the ways of old, but are forcing their women to take on their husbands lastnames. So, you'll find that many more women inhabit Paradox Island because of the varying depths of legal freedom. Even though Edge City possesses an elite Night Squadron (purpose to be explained in a later post), there are still much freedoms on the Island as compared to the Mainland.

Given that, if you've got a character in this series, and I choose to marry you guys off, I'll encounter the task of lastname creation. So, it might be good to start thinking of something since the only definite rule of Paradoxian Law states that it must be a permutation of both last names, containing elements of each, and not an entirely made up lastname.

Or, you could be Stick. Anyway, new topic: GlobalNet.

Back in the last few days of Terran, the world was beginning to evolve its internet into a globalnet using the more evolved technologies at the time. Since Terran was destroyed, the GlobalNet began anew on Earth II. On Terran, the globalnet was exclusively controlled by the government giving high speed access only to its officials. This was counterproductive to the whole idea of a utopian society, so Earth II has a full access pass to the GlobalNet, with a restricted access level strictly for government known as DoxNet.

Before, I go too in depth on the GlobalNet, you'll receive a brief introduction of the various GlobalNet interfaces available on Earth II. Also, you'll have to realize that almost every electronic/electrical structure on Earth II is connected to the GlobalNet. Select devices have access to DoxNet mostly because it is a government structure, and not everyone needs access. I'll summarize DoxNet on another post.

Interfaces

First, we'll cover those I've already introduced.

In Domain, we come into the storyline with Pat, a rogue hacker from the days of old whom used to reside on the Mainland. His past is a little hazy right now, but we'll get into that when the time comes. Being that he's gadget savvy, he's got a nice access to GlobalNet through the old standard...computers. The standard desktop interface, his entire apartment is wired to G-Net (as the hackers call it), his building is wired to G-Net, and he carries both a watch with access to DoxNet and a mobile tablet type computer with dual access to DoxNet and G-Net.

In Boundaries and Paradox, we're briefly introduced to my character, whom has connections to major industries and companies on Paradox Island...one of those being the developer and keeper of GlobalNet and DoxNet. His vehicle, later mentioned in detail, is linked directly to DoxNet. His phone, his watch, and his other gadgets are all linked directly to both GlobalNet and DoxNet. Judging thus far from the people that are linked to DoxNet, you can figure out something about their present and past since DoxNet requires that one must have worked for/is working for the government.

In Dark Diaries, the replicator plates and holoviewers are linked to the G-Net for purposes of downloading new recipes and new forms of entertainment, respectively.

In Darkness, Ryan only has one device knowingly connected, his laptop accesses G-Net on a daily basis to provide whatever information he may be requesting, and others that he doesn't. His Electriz also connects to G-Net, but Ryan doesn't know about that. It's main purposes are for updates to its onboard systems, mapping software, and navigational instruments.

In Showers, Crystle and Tom have access to a subset of the G-Net reserved for educational research ventures known as EduNet. With EduNet, and G-Net, they're able to keep track of all the occurances on Earth II and the surrounding solar systems in conjunction with their research. EduNet often entitles them limited access to DoxNet, and sometimes the older Internet (only existent on Mars and the older Terran Moon). All forms of GlobalNet are fully backwards compatible with the Internet, but the Internet can't interface too well with GlobalNet, EduNet, DoxNet, and the other subsets of the G-Net.

TransNet handles all traffic for the planet, any form of automated transportation systems, the space/airport, the mass transit systems, the synchronization between consumer vehicles, the downloads and maintenance of private and public vehicles, and anything else directly affecting the transportation of citizens...including elevators and lifts.

More on this to follow, I have to get Rogue and myself to school.

Or, you can be Sick, Strick, Brivenson, Bon, Sterick, etc...

Anywho, an elaboration on transportation technologies because it will become instrumental in the next update and explain why Rosy is walking to Palau Town.

In Edge City (County and City), all transportation is one of three forms: on foot (or whatever you use to move around), via mass transit, or via community shared vehicle. All citizens living in Edge City are forbidden from owning any kind of transportation vehicle due to the spacing within the City, and the TransNet handling systems. Vehicles from other cities can enter Edge City provided that they meet TransNet guidelines for automated vehicular control. If your vehicle does not meet these guidelines, then your vehicle doesn't enter Edge City. Instead, you'd park it outside of the city limits at one of the mass transit stations, and ride in on one of the subway, train, or busing systems. Fines for violation of this ordinance reach upwards of 5000 credits. (I'll explain currency another time, just for reference...$1 USD = 0.50 credits. Therefore, example above is $10000 = 5000 credits.)

All transportation is controlled exclusively by the Transportation Mobility Commission (TMC, whom Brandon works for) with extensive usage of the TransNet hard/software. Edge City (County and City) is the only city on the island that operates in this manner.

This explains why Pat had to walk the seven blocks from his apartment (there was transportation, he chose not to take it) to the fountain, and why Rosy is walking through the plaza (also, transportation available, but it moves around the Central Plaza).

Mass Transit Systems

The Space/Airport

The Edge City International Space/Airport services all modes of interstellar and interplanetary transportation serving much like an ancient Terran airport, but with a space handling capability tacked on. Since smaller, consumer vehicles are also capable of space flight, the space/airport is specifically designed for service of space vehicles with abilities to carry 200+ passengers. Interplanetary (air) transportation is strictly controlled by TransNet under the guise of DoxNet producing fully 100% unmanned travel to any space/air hub on the planet.

AeroTrain and SubTrain

AeroTrain, a suspended monorail type system used for highspeed travel between three points within Edge City, and linking Edge City to all the other cities on the Island, is just one of two train-based automated transportation systems operated by TMC and TransNet. The second, SubTrain, an underground monorail type system used for highspeed linking between the eight continents of Earth II, serves as the transfer point between AeroTrain systems on other continents. The two systems, integrated flawlessly, serve to efficiently transport all citizens of Earth II between continents and cities without impacting the surrounding ecosystems too greatly.

CityTrans and DoxTrans

CityTrans is the network of automated bus-like vehicles used to connect to various points within Edge City, since all vehicles in Edge City are controlled by TransNet, allowing for speedy and efficient transportation of all citizens. DoxTrans, strictly for use by emergency and government vehicles, is Edge City's only form of emergency transportation. When DoxTrans vehicles are deployed, all other non-essential traffic systems are shut down, and moved out of the way of emergency vehicles thereby decreasing wait times and increasing emergency vehicles effectiveness. DoxTrans only exists on Paradox Island.

BizTrans

Since Edge City devotes much of its space to businesses, a newer system of single- and double-occupant vehicles was developed to allow business people in the areas of Business Park Plaza, Business HQ Plaza, and the other business areas to move around without having to rely on the larger CityTrans systems. These systems are also controlled by TransNet, but on a smaller scale in the BizTransNet subset. They allow for efficient movement of business employees on an on-demand basis rather than by set schedules like the other systems of the Island. This system is much more popular with messengers and food delivery personnel in the downtown area.

On the rest of the Island, one can own any vehicle they desire since there is a monopoly on all tranportation. HyWire, manufacturers and developers of every single automated and non-automated transportation with exception to space faring vehicles; and creators of TransNet, markets and sells community shared vehicles as well as personal vehicles for all citizens on Earth II. The Electriz that Ryan drives, the University X-Drive minivan that Crystle and Tom drive, as well as all the other vehicles, are manufactured and maintained by HyWire.

Bicycles are still popular modes of transportation among the more mountainous and forest areas, and for those with the money to do so, site-to-site quantum transporters and micro-transporters often suffice for those small trips to specific places. But nothing beats a walk on foot down the beaches and coasts of Oakridge.

In Boundaries, I created a new race to my line of species, the Taroxian.

Taroxians are often big in stature, towering over any meta-human, and are one of the few species that don't share a meta-human counterpart. Meaning, no meta-humans possess a Taroxian triple helix. I'll explain more on this intriguing species as the stories progress...be aware that Tom in Domain is a Taroxian.

Before I go into the other two regions, a brief explanation on our power source...it's the three suns and two moons.

Solaris I, II, and III

When Earth II was artificially created, the higher being felt that is should possess the ability to use both solar energies and lunar energies rather than the polluting environments of its predecessor, Earth Prime. The solar system's suns and moon were also artificially created and placed in such a way that the three suns wouldn't fry the planet during the day, but would still supply energy overnight by way of the two moons. The proximity of the suns also creates a contrast since the larger sun (Solaris I) is actually the farthest away, while the smaller sun (Solaris II) is located closer to the planet. Solaris III is located in between the two other suns, but is closer to Solaris II than it is to Solaris I.

SolNar

Earth II, the entire planet, runs on SolNar panels...power plants that are able to efficiently convert both solar and lunar energies over to electrical energy for supply to both the Island and the rest of the planet. Most of the power plants are located on one continent in the southern hemisphere, and through an intricate network of power distribution modules and conduits, power can be transported to wherever its needed all around the planet.

Erdu City

In certain part of the planet, such as Erdu, the locals have figured out how to use their surrounding environments to power their necessities without harming their sources. In Erdu, a large portion of the population doesn't use electricity or electrical appliances, yet they remain connected to the great G-Net through centralized areas such as their libraries or InterScape cafes. Ryan (main character in Darkness: Pathetique) lives in Erdu on a mountainside overlooking the split between the residential and commercial business districts of Edge City. He uses his garden as a method of energy generation to power the two things that need power in his home: the laptop and a lamp. Unbeknownst to him, the Electriz (Ryan's car) generates its own power from its hydrogen/electric drive systems simply by operating; or when sitting in Ryan's driveway, it can draw from the surrounding plants to extract hydrogen from the atmosphere. The by-product of his car? Water.

In Erdu, the locals have used the winds to power energy efficient windmills, have used the trees to power advanced oxygenation systems that produce both energy and lifesupport resources. Erdu has decided not to embrace the highly technological world of Edge City, and has developed into a beautiful community high above the towers of Edge City with tree lined dirt and gravel roads, homes with large gardens, and its only stop on the AeroTrain near its downtown area serving as the only highspeed link to the rest of the planet. Its citizens are more in tune with the planet and the Island's life, and tend to shun away from the technology, but not completely repel from it.

Just in case you're wondering, concepts of the HyWire vehicles from the series.

HyWire Electriz Interior

HyWire Electriz Front

HyWire Electriz Top View--Doors Open

HyWire Electriz Electronics

HyWire Marauder Exterior (Lee has this car)

HyWire Electriz Front

HyWire Electriz (Erdu)

HyWire X-drive steering controls.

HyWire XTC

Driving the HyWire

As soon as GM markets this vehicle, I'll have that and a Prius.

To answer your question, Elara, with three suns, average temperature is about the same as Earth Prime all year round...a cool 86 degrees F. There are seasons, but the temperature doesn't tend to vary too much. Highest temperature ever recorded: 96 degrees Fahrenheit. Lowest temperature ever recorded: 30 degrees Fahrenheit. How? You'll just have to wait for updates to the novel to find out. Mostly, Domain and Paradox Island will cover that.

Okay, the actual temperatures to the planet number into the triple digits during the day, and fall into below freezing at night because of the suns and their influence on the weather. Remember, while 86 degrees might be warm to us, the meta-humans aren't human. They've adapted based on their third helix. For certain species, such as Rosy's, they prefers nighttime due to its lowered temperature and non-exposure to the suns.

The planet is weather controlled through techniques that Pat will expose to his advantage as the story progresses. The weather control systems become instrumental to the main plot, so I can't go in depth about them here.

Since Edge City has blocked most of the suns' rays with tall building structures, you'll find it to be cooler there during the day than the rest of the island. Since Erdu is up in the mountains, its temperature tends to remain pretty well regulated due to the high concentration of plant life surrounding the area. Zedari is mostly fields, so runs into a more arid slightly humid region than the other areas. Oakridge is like Long Beach...mostly...think midrange California-like temperatures with trees always around to provide shade tossed in with an occasional ocean breeze and little creatures running about the trees.
