Dark Diaries
Part of the Paradox Island series
By: CIAHacker/Zabuza

Prologue

Huddled in a dark quiet room, the sound of an oscillating fan in the background, and the subtle creaking of an older armchair underneath her soft, long bathrobe. Her fully independent companion sitting on the unmade bed behind her form licking himself in a perpetual ritual of cleanliness as she leans forward to continue her perusal of the ancient paper documents on her cluttered desk. The holoviewer playing ancient renderings of popular entertainment and her computer actively processing the large amounts of writing bestowed upon her. Deadlines weighing heavily on her shoulders, as the news never ceases to produce the mundane stories of her lifetime, but the discs must be delivered before next morning so that the masses of Edge City can have their quick, soulless, information fix.
Almost like an intoxicating cloud of despair, advances in technology created an obsolete world for the printed word of yesterday. An empty vessel for the writings of old never to be filled by the clacking and clicking of the days of new, Christine toils daily for the efforts of the nation’s largest news syndicate, the Edge City Chronicle, in hopes that the media shall one day return to the glories of paper information. The automatons of new with direct brain-transfer info-links, holoviewer on-demand updates, and always on globalnet access crave the information fix as much as citizens of long gone Terran once craved instant fixes of caffeine and pleasure.
In her native Oakridge, the news still finds a way to distribute itself in the form of a citywide micro press recounting tales of the day before, tales unfolded that morning, or tales yet to unfold. She dabbled as a freelancer for the city’s opinion and observation column, providing delightful and often joyously bitter insight on the musings of the Island’s many diverse peoples. To find a diversity as rich as Paradox Island anywhere else on their planet proved as difficult as the old saying of finding a needle in a haystack. While the advanced civilization living in Edge City had never experienced the lives where one would encounter a haystack, her life was filled with endless discovery and wonder. Often escaping from the Island, and traveling to interstellar realms thanks to her significant other’s ties to the major form of intercelestial transportation, the air/spaceport served as a second home, a kind of dimensional portal to worlds and beings in the far beyond. Nevertheless, never venture into the world of Disney Planet. That was a whole other form of evil that no one should have to endure. That was a job for junior editors.

Aww, so you have to rewrite the part with Brandon? Well... at least it shouldn't be hard. Post on, for Filler Kitty has been here.

Chapter One: Xodan Flats

It hadn't been long that morning when Fappy, her small pudgy black and white cat, wandered into the kitchen in hopes of swiping something from the replicator plate. Her beloved, Brandon, had taken to standing in the front yard watching the birds circle above the houses across the street, the ocean just beyond those structures. Miko, their shy little half-breed cat--a product of playing near the replicator plate while Harrison slept one afternoon--sat at Brandon's feet as the breeze ruffled her fur and shifted through Brandon's pajamas. The morning smelled heavenly with wafted scents from the Great Ocean and surrounding oak trees as Christine stood in the kitchen watching her love stand in the front yard. Just beyond him, the first of the three suns broke the horizon guiding its first beams of light through the dim living room filtering into the softly lit kitchen. She sighed, rolled her eyes, and walked towards the front door with Fappy following her a few steps behind.

She stood at the door watching her husband stand partially naked on the front lawn, the wind blowing through his hairy legs. "You planning on standing there half-naked all morning?"

He raised his head, and turned to face her. "Yeah, I was planning on it. Besides, the neighbors are on vacation." Miko walked around his legs then up to Christine. Miko meowed softly as she stared up at Christine, then shifted her gaze to the pudgy furry mass following her.

"Have you seen Harrison? The other two already ate, but his bowl is still full." She paused a moment to push back her flowing brown hair before glancing into Brandon's piercing hazel eyes, "I just need to know where that cat is. He took one of my datadiscs."

Brandon started walking past her towards the bedroom, "I'm sure his entire purpose today was to take your datadisc," he yelled from the bedroom, "and I'll be driving down to the Mass Transit station today. We're being deployed to Xodan Flats." He moved towards the table and sat down in front of the holodisc viewer; Miko jumped up onto the table and sat near the viewer. "Did you ever find out exactly how we got Miko?"

"Nope, that's your job. Your company designs these things," she motioned as she pointed towards the replicator plate, "Anyway, I'm needed in Zedari today because our editor in chief is stuck on the Mainland, and I have to cover the annual showers watch with Tom and Crystle."

"Really? I heard that Ryan might actually show up this time." He pushed Miko away from the holodisc viewer and inserted a disc sitting on the table. The viewer's projector dome rotated before producing a 360-degree rotational depth map of the arid fields near Xodan Flats. Several lighted dots began appearing on the fields at varying depths; a small data window appeared next to the rotational depth map scrolling several streams of data. Brandon sighed.

"Lots of work for you today, then? That is odd though, I didn't expect that Ryan would ever leave Erdu, let alone for the annual showers watch with the astronomers." She touched a few contacts on the replicator plate generating two steaming plates of food, and three smaller plates of cat food. Taking great care not to knock Fappy onto the replicator plate again for fear that he may evolve into something else, she carried the plates to the table before setting the bowls of cat food on the ground. "There has to be some kind of safety so that we don't randomly spawn cats using the replicator plate."

"Fappy evolving from a sponge and some of Miko's fur was just a little strange that night. I'm sure it had something to do with the approaching showers." He tapped the viewer, turning the holodisc off before settling back to eat his meal. "Mmm, textured proteins and carbohydrates."

"It's even more odd that Miko spawned from Harrison hacking a fur ball onto the plate to begin with. Wait," she stooped to retrieve a small holodisc from the beneath the table near her chair, "what's this?" She removed Brandon's datadisc and inserted the holodisc into the viewer. It beeped. Incompatible.

"Try the holoprojector in the living room; the holoviewer's not equipped for that format of disc." Brandon munched on his Eckta'arian sausages before dropping Miko off the table. "I'm hoping to meet up with Pat later this afternoon. He said he had a new gadget to show me."

"While you're there, can you get those datadiscs from Tom? I need those for...well, you know." She walked into their living room and placed the disc into a recessed reader on the wall. The holoprojectors came to life spinning around to recreate the solid image of their older cat sitting near the front door. A scrolling message beneath him revealed that he was taking leave, and knew not when he would return. His image "walked" out the door before the holodisc dissengaged. "What? He's leaving because he's needed and he doesn't know when he's coming back? What the heck is that?"

Brandon placed his empty plate back onto the replicator plate for disintegration before walking back up to his wife. He placed his hand on her lower back and drew her in close. His soft beard brushing up against her cheek as he kissed her then whispered, "I'll see you later tonight, Mrs. Demarantus."

"As shall I, Mr. Demarantus."

Okay, the cats evolving from each other is just weird, but I like it... but a sponge? Oh boy, lol! Nice changes I must say... though I notice you don't do much detail of appearances of the characters. I assume it's gradual.

Actually I think Fappy evolving from a sponge is remarkably accurate... if not a ball of pizza dough.

You wanna talk squish...

And oddly enough, Fappy's also the smarter of the two.

Brandon turned to find Miko at his feet. He bent down picking up the gray kitty and walked towards the front door. He touched a few contacts on the door panel near the controls for the upright replicator. In a swirling flash of light, the machine generated his uniform for the Transportation Mobility Commission--the single agency responsible for all transportation systems on the planet--and a smaller rendition of the same uniform for Miko. He set the cat down, she walked away clearly displeased with having to wear anything.

"You'd think she'd figure out by now that I'd continue to do that every morning," he said as he brushed off his black and silver trimmed uniform. His brown hair still a mess, he almost resembled a hobbit or bear of sorts, he walked out into the yard and took a deep breath. The air still crisp from the morning dews of the Great Ocean and slightly chilly as was the customary temperature of mornings in Oakridge. Christine stood at the doorway watching Miko try to bite off the silver trimmings of her mini-TMC uniform as Fappy waddled up between Miko and Brandon carrying one of Christine's datadiscs. "Is that what you were looking for?"

Christine immediately snatched the disc from the pudgy one's mouth, "Yes, damn these cats. Carpooling?"

"No, I just don't know where I put the car," he scratched his head as he looked around the empty street for his HyWire Sentinel, "oh, wait." He pulled his computer from his front pocket and touched a few controls on the screen. The car materialized into view in front of the house as his computer began to ring. He lowered the still ringing computer and walked towards the vehicle, "I guess I forgot that it was cloaked."

Christine picked up the pudgy one and held him upside-down, "Have fun out there," she yelled, "because I know I won't today." She smiled as Fappy struggled to right himself, and walked back into the house shutting the door behind her. She set Fappy down on his head on the table and popped the disc into the holoviewer. The dome, once again, spun around and illuminated producing a video montage of the showers of yesteryear, the crowds that gathered to watch, and the ensuing explosion from the giant meteor that impacted the Mainland. That took place about fifteen years ago. It was forseen that something of that magnitude would happen again, this time affecting the Island, but research and exploration had shown that no meteors were located anywhere within the immediate space of Earth II.

On a recent trip to Nisia Prime, she had spoken to the scientist there about the incident on the Mainland involving the showers, and had learned that they too were tracking any unusual anomalies in the area for signs of impending destruction. During her stay on the planet, she was introduced to J'rek, a prominent scientist whose primary area of study centered upon the development of the Earth II artificial planet. J'rek, a man of great power amongst his peoples, offered to share information to the reporter that she wasn't supposed to acquire or know. Being the great reporter she is, she took the datadisc that day and smuggled it back to Earth II for her perusal. That disc now sat on her desk yet to be viewed.

And I take it that the big thing that the Tom in Showers spotted is a meteor or something? Oh boy, this is getting good.

Aww, Miko in a little uniform is cute.

Morning had passed and midafternoon had started to seep in before she finally gathered up any effort to move from her position on the back porch. She had spent the last few hours watching the birds circle above her backyard as the cats sunned themselves in the middle of the yard. The disc had been moved from its dusty position on the desk to the small table near the front door. She was ready to leave that morning to meet them for the afternoon showers, but realized that she had no form of transportation to meet Crystle and Tom out in Zedari. Her neighbor across the street, Lee, had left early morning before Brandon for "work" and would not return for at least a couple of hours.

She walked through her quiet home, the cats following closely behind her, and watched through her windows as the silvered Marauder belonging to Lee parked in his driveway. He'll give me a ride, she thought as she walked out the front door grabbing the disc and walked across the street. When she reached the vehicle, the dark tinted windows silhouetted a figure sprawled over the backseats. She leaned in, but was unable to see if it was Lee through the electronically tinted glass. She knew he was wearing his contacts from the depth of the tint, and pulled a pair of jet-black sunglasses from her pocket.

Lee sat up from his position exiting the vehicle and walking around to meet her, his fabricated brown eyes staring painfully at her. She handed him the sunglasses as he removed his contact lenses, his crimson eyes quickly adjusting to the subdued light beneath the oak trees lining the street. He asked about Brandon going to Xodan before turning towards his mailbox retrieving the solitary postcard that Crystle and Tom had sent to all their friends. He shuddered, and placed the postcard back in the mailbox before turning to face her again. He asked her if she was planning to attend the showers again.

"Speaking of which, can I trouble you for a ride? Brandon took the car," she paused to pick up the sponge of a cat and tossed him into the middle of the street hoping the cat would get the hint and head towards the house, "which we absolutely love the car and can't thank you enough for..." Lee held up his hand and turned to walk towards the driver side of his car. She felt like a bother to him, but knew that he never saw her that way even though he led two different lives he only lived one life around her and Brandon.

On the dusty roads outside Oakridge leading towards Zedari, she contemplated the contents of the disc sitting in her pocket, "Um, can you drop me off at the central library in Edge City instead, or the Mass Transit station if it's out of your way?" He slowed the vehicle to a stop, stepped out, and told her she could have the vehicle for the day since he needed to tend to something in the City. Before she could answer, the door shut and the vehicle resumed its autodrive route to Zedari. She turned to watch him stand near the elken tree in the road as he disappeared behind her. "Marauder," she started speaking in the general direction towards the vehicle controls, "please alter course towards Xodan Flats. I'll give specifics upon arrival." The vehicle remapped its course and turned off towards Xodan Flats.

She reached forward touching a communications console button and dialed Lee's phone. She told him that she'd be okay, she had decided on heading up passed Zedari towards Erdu City for their library. A small fib, but she figured there would be no problem with Lee regardless if he found out or not. Satisfied with Lee's answer, she pulled the disc from her pocket and inserted it into the vehicle's holoviewer. The vehicle's windshield dimmed allowing the holoemitters to project images of a giant meteor suspended in front of her. She read over the data streaming on the central console screen as she learned the possible fate of this year's showers. The vehicle moved effortlessly over the unpaved dirt and gravel roads on its way to Xodan. Her study was momentarily interrupted by a bright white beam of light shooting up from far away Edge City behind her.

She immediately thought of Lee, but remembered that he still continued to be an active agent despite his cover as a retired agent, so he would be fine no matter what happened. The vehicle's communications systems alerted her to an incoming communication from Xodan Flats. She answered the comm, Brandon's voice filling the cabin as the vehicle approached the edges of Xodan Flats.

"Lee just called and said you were headed up to Erdu City. So, you're not going to the showers then?"

"No, actually, I'm on my way to see you," she deactivated the holoviewer and removed the disc, "and I have something I want you to look over with me." He sighed on the other end of the line, obviously displeased that she had not informed him prior to her departure towards the inspection site.

"I'd love to, but I've got some things to finish up here," he said but she sensed his displeasure, "and stay away from the inspection site for the time being. It's a really sensitive area." She expressed her love, and they disengaged communications. The vehicle asked for its final destination on its approach to Xodan Flats. She just asked it to stop near the entrance to the main road, and waited for the vehicle to arrive at its destination, the small dust circles kicking up below its tires as it drove on.

After Brandon had completed his assignments for the day, he met her in the Sentinel just outside the city. He engaged the autodrive recall back to Lee's home on his Marauder, and perused the holodisk using his portable viewer out in front of the Sentinel.

"Listen," he started after analyzing the data streams and diagrams, "you can't show this to anyone just yet. In fact, I'd say we should give a copy of it to Pat." He removed the disc and placed it in his pocket.

"Why Pat? Why not Lee?" she paused to check the area for any unwanted guests but only found birds in the nearby trees, "Lee's better equipped to give us answers anyway."

Brandon unlocked the doors as they both boarded the Sentinel to head back home, "Yes, but because Lee is better equipped, he can't see it either. I'm sending a copy to Pat." He guided the vehicle towards the main road to Oakridge concentrating on the road, then turned to his love, "Please call me next time you plan on surprising me at the work sites."

She watched him pilot the vehicle, watching his eyes glisten in the light of the two moons, "I understand that the work you do is highly secretive, but I felt that you'd do better with this disc that I would. Anyway, I can't let you send a copy to Pat. It just doesn't feel right. You know how he feels about Lee." Brandon said nothing as the vehicle accelerated passed the Marauder before parking itself outside their home, the Marauder parking itself across the street. Christine stepped out of the vehicle, picked up the sleepy Fappy lying on the sidewalk, and walked up to Lee's car. She scribbled a small note and attached it to the sleeping cat's ear taking care to place the cat on the hood of Lee's car before following her husband back into their house.

Brandon handed her a copied disc as she walked in, "Trust me, it's better this way. Please mail this." She reluctantly accepted the disc, and placed it in her mailbox at the end of the yard. I hope you're right, she thought as she walked back up the walk to her home, her fuzzy Brandon waiting at the door for her.

She followed him into the living room, their fuzzballs curling up around his legs as he rested on the couch from a long day in the field.

"Can you tell me what you're doing out in Xodan?" she inquired plopping down next to him.

He stared lovingly into her eyes, ran his finger across her chin, "If you weren't a reporter, yes I could. But given the circumstances, no." She shoved him and walked into the kitchen.

"Tell the cats then," she yelled from somewhere near the replicator plate.

Miko and Fappy lay curled in Brandon's lap, each staring up at him. He scooped up the kitties to inspect them for hidden recording devices. After he was satisfied, he leaned back with them still in his lap and started recounting his day to the furry audience.

"See, kitties, I go to Xodan everyday this week to survey a new area for the Paradox Island-Mainland SubTrain Tunnel expansion," he leaned in closer to the kitties, their ears perking up and Fappy starting to purr, "but we've found a pocket of some unknown substance that we think could be interrelated to the Showers." He pulled back, petting Fappy, and noticed that Christine had been hovering over him. "How much did you hear?"

"I didn't hear that you found a pocket of some unknown something related to the Showers."

He smiled, "Good. I can get into a lot of trouble for telling you stuff like that."

She ran her fingers through his messy, brown hair, "Yes, hun, but you didn't tell me. You told the cats."

He laughed, grabbing her down into his lap, the cats scurrying away, and hugged her tight, "How was your day?"

"I almost got up the courage to inspect the disc before I gave it to you, but I just copied it and kept it. Oh, and I found something on your PCD that I know you shouldn't have."

"Hun, that's confidential information, you shouldn't have been snooping."

"I wasn't," she moved to sit next to him watching Fappy flop onto of Miko to fall asleep, "the big one turned it on, and there it was. Classified information on Lee. Now, why do you have that?"

"Why do I have anything? You know I work TMC. You know how secretive we are with our projects," he stood up drudging towards the bedroom, "and you know that I'll have certain government files from time to time."

"Yeah, but we both know that he's not fully retired."

"Yes, and I wanted to see if that was reflected anywhere. You know how vindictive Pat can be, and I didn't want him finding things and starting problems. Lee does live right across the street," he emerged from the bedroom clad in something more loose than his TMC uniform. After scooping up the spongy mass that was Fappy and walking him over to the backyard door, he tapped on a contact on the nearby computer interface activating the living room projectors. The holoprojectors moved into position, beaming a three-dimensional depth map of the Xodan Flats region. Deep in the middle, a solid black sphere pulsated. He set down Fappy outside, and walked over to the map. After pulling the map down and compressing it to reveal the world around it a bit more, he stood back to allow time to pass and render predictive data. Nearby Oakridge appeared on the cross-section, then the Zedari fields, stopping just on the outskirts of Scientia Hill and the dusty road leading to town of Erdu. The image rotated, accentuating the solid, pulsating sphere, and the formation of the Showers clouds. The rains fell over the fields, and the entire scene compressed again--this time faster--revealing the entire island and surrounding Great Ocean, TMC building towering almost in the center of the Island.

"Amazing," she whispered.

I removed the rest, as I'll be rewriting that portion.

Chapter III: San Angeles

"An extremely long time ago, long before the planet Earth II was born, there was another planet--Terran (or Earth Prime). In that majestic planet, there were three grandious cities on the west coast of one of its continents: Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento. When Terran was destroyed, and Earth II created, the three cities were combined forming two great cities on Earth II: San Angeles and San Cremento."

She switched off the mobile holoviewer in Lee's Marauder. "Why are we going to San Angeles?"

In the DoxTrans access tunnel running parallel to the Paradox Island-San Angeles SubTrain Tunnel, Lee engaged the holoviewer again showing the rotational data of the approaching meteor. She glanced towards the windows in the tunnel, watching as a SubTrain zoomed past them.

After exiting the tunnel system, they sat watching the Mass Transit Station platform for Pat. He had received the copied disc early that morning, and after her guilty conscience informed Lee that they had sent out a copy of the disc, she found herself sharing a ride with him on the pursuit of Pat to see Server One in San Angeles. She watched Lee's eyes through his pitch-black sunglasses, seeing the look of intense dislike he harbored towards Pat, and wondered if she had helped to increase the hatred they had for each other.

He spotted Pat's figure walking across the terminal, and after the vehicle attached itself to AngelNet, then rolled onto the automated second-level highway chasing after Pat's AutoTaxi.

Mid-way through the chase, Lee tapped her indicating the presence of unwanted company behind them. She glanced back in the sea of automated vehicles spotting a single black Sentinel following them. It was what remained of Harbor West. Lee had indicated that they'd be ditching the Marauder.

"How?" she asked sitting back down to face him.

He pulled up his sleeve and depressed a contact on his watch. Realizing that she had been discovered for possessing the time stop device that Brandon had found, she sat watching Lee. After briefly explaining that she had every intention to return the device, they left the vehicle running amongst the other frozen vehicles on the elevated highway. In the distance, a bright blue light bounced rhythmically down the roadway; it was Pat and he was running.

"Is he all that dangerous? He can't be. He was an analyst," she panted out as they ran down the highway dodging other frozen vehicles, their watches counting off the seconds to time-resume.

"We had a falling out years ago, and yes he can be dangerous." Lee forced out while running towards the second Mass Transit Station. He stopped at the turbolift doors, and pried them open. They climbed down the maintenance ladder in the shaft to the street level below, and began jogging towards the Zona District.
