Spider Fighter was another Atari 2600 game I'd play back in the day a lot (not sure why I didn't list this in my last post), Spider Fighter was one of the first manic shmups, that game really tested your finger speed and dexterity. You had to guard fruit from the attacking spiders, definitely left you tired at the end of the day.

Bubble Symphony, both arcade and Saturn version, great Bubble Bobble sequel, never get tired of playing it.

If you can get past the first quest, the second quest is a lot easier as you start with all spells.

Heh, in Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins Arthur has the ability (can't remember how I did it, may have collected the Pegasus boots, or whatever they were called) up to 3 times, yes a triple jump. That game isn't quite as hard as th original GnG titles, but it still has it's spots, Ultimate Mode I hear is an absolute nightmare I haven't tried yet.

Trigon, an old Konami vertical shmup that plays like Raiden, or a Toaplan vert, except it's a little older than all those titles.

Technosoft made some nice shooters, a few for the TG-16, they are mostly famous for their Thunder Force series, shame though as they had some nice games like the Rayxanber series.

Yeah that would be Seb@s from the shmups boards, he takes requests for soundtrack uploads, and tends to update his radio playlist quite often. Overall he's got one of the best radio stations on the internet.

Posted on 06-04-07 07:55 PM, in Wow, the Genesis has a ton of amazing shmups Link
I recently purchased for my Genesis Fire Shark (Same! Same! Same!, thank you Toaplan, and thank Dreamworks for bringing it to the US), I used to be able to 1 credit to stage 8 of the first loop (the game never truly ends, typical Toaplan) and broke the 1 million mark a few times. Sadly I took a break from it and my game really suffered, I can't do worth a damn in it unless I start practicing again.

The one on MAME hopefully gets sound soon as the soundtrack for the arcade version sounds a bit better than the Genesis soundtrack.

As for Kyukyoku Tiger, it may be inferior, but it still kicks all sorts of ass.

Once beat Gradius IV within 3 continues, I usually go through about 5-6 on average, exception being the one on the PSP where I tend to do a little worse.

As for Gradius III Arcade on PS 2, good luck, the game is absolute murder on the reflexes, though I know a guy tviks (the Gradius Master as I call him) who can loop that bitch many times over.

As for the last Gradius boss being easy, the difficulty level doesn't matter, tickle the damned last boss with a feather, and it'll blow up (a tradition carried over into Parodius as well), but it's to get to him that's the hard part, his base is absolutely loaded with traps (moving walls, well placed enemies) and enemy fire.

Yeah with the exception of Gradius 4 and later (Gradius 2's boss rush if you die on the last enemy I believe you go straight to him after the Zub Rush), Gradius 3, no matter if you're on the last boss of the rush or not, if you die, you restart the boss rush (the game's not considered the hardest shmup ever made for nothing).

Oh well, at least I didn't win the least active award.

Now if an award were given away for best beard that makes you look like a maniac or axe murderer, could've won something.

1) Vic Viper - whoever pilots this craft has had to go through hell to save the universe, all be it some stranger or James Burton (MSX games)

2) Bub and Bob- yeah they seem cute, but they always took care of business either saving their girlfriends, turning themselves back human, and defeating the Hyper Drunk and saving the people of the land from remaining bubble blowing dragons.

3) Mr. Do - not sure what he was trying to save, but he did go through a lot of trouble collecting sherries and defeating enemies to finish a level.

4) Pilot of the R-9 from R-Type- saving the universe from the man made Bydo empire was tough enough, but in the final game R-Type Final, one of the last stages was 15 minutes long and required you to survive long enough to go back in time, no boss at the end, but the levels length insured you had to somehow stay alive to make it.

5) Ptolemy the Witch (Fairyland Story, Google it to find out more about the game)- this little witch had to survive 101 grueling levels that were actually puzzles in order to get back the jewel from a large dragon (what the jewel was for I dunno, games back in 85 had no story usually).

So Xeo added Axelay to his SNES collection, I just added Sagaia (Darius 2) for my Genesis, tough game, it really beats me up pretty good by the second level on the upper route, though I'm not sure if that's th higher scoring route.

Worst is when you dream you are in a fantasy land with a bloodthirsty emperor and his shadow henchmen (who by the way are dead humans inside of some kind of suit) and when you make your escape you wake up just as he's about to try and rip you open before you can. After you awake you look on the walls and still see the nightmare images on the walls, in the dark. The tall emperor (bald guy in a huge black trench coat, about 7 feet tall I'd venture) has appeared in several nightmares of mine over the years, but thankfully the main nightmare I used to have with him in it no longer occurs ( it used to occur 7-10 times a year, never seeming to change in how it played out from what I can remember about it).
